    • An exhaust gas purification device for a general-purpose engine includes a crankcase and a cylinder block provided continuously on an upper portion of the crankcase and inclined to one lateral side of the crankcase. A catalytic converter is provided in an exhaust muffler of the engine. A downstream end of a secondary air introduction pipe is connected to an exhaust pipe upstream of the muffler. A dedicated air filter is connected through a one-way valve to an upstream side of the secondary air introduction pipe. The filter is disposed between the crankcase and a lower surface of the cylinder block. The secondary air introduction pipe is arranged so as to meander on one side of the cylinder block. Accordingly, the device can be employed without increasing an outer size of the engine, and can also securely introduce secondary air into an exhaust system, thereby enhancing an exhaust gas purifying effect.

    • An intake air filter (1) is for an internal combustion engine, especially in a motor vehicle. The filter has a filter housing (2) having a raw air inlet (4), a pure air outlet (5), and an annular filter element (3) which is arranged in the filter housing (2) and through which air can flow in a radial manner from the outside towards the inside. The filter element has a first end disk (10) on the axial end thereof, said disk has an opening (12) by which means the pure air outlet (5) communicates with the inside (8) of the annular filter element (3). The purpose is to reduce the influence of a secondary air induction on the fresh air supply of the internal combustion engine. To this end, the filter housing (2) has a secondary air outlet (6), on the pure air side, and the annular filter element (3) has a second end disk (11) on an axial end opposing the first end disk (10). The second end disk has at least one opening (17) by which the secondary air outlet (6) communicates with the inside (8) of the annular filter element (3).

    • A vehicle ECU performs abnormality diagnoses including a deterioration diagnosis for a catalyst, a leakage diagnosis for an evaporative gas purge system, an abnormality diagnosis for an EGR system, and an abnormality diagnosis for a secondary air introducing system. During abnormality diagnoses, the ECU calculates the performance frequency for each diagnosis. When the performance frequency has reached the required level, the ECU performs the abnormality diagnosis under the normal abnormality diagnosing condition (performance condition, diagnosing method, and judging condition) in order to not adversely affect exhaust emissions, vehicle drivability, etc. If the performance frequency has not reached the required level, the ECU performs the abnormality diagnosis by changing the abnormality diagnosing condition to emphasize an increase of the performance frequency of the abnormality diagnosis, thereby increasing the performance frequency of the abnormality diagnosis. Consequently, it is possible to maintain the performance frequency of the abnormality diagnosis for vehicle systems.
