    • A kingpin assembly for heavy duty vehicles having upper and lower yokes of a steering spindle knuckle straddling upper and lower sides of an end portion of an axle. The upper and lower steering spindle yokes have respective bores in registration with a bore in the axle end portion. A kingpin has a central portion fixedly secured within the axle bore, and has opposite, accurately machined and polished end portions disposed within respective upper and lower steering spindle yoke apertures. There is an annular gap between the peripheries of the kingpin end portions and the interior surfaces of the steering spindle yoke bores. An annular sleeve resides within the gap. A pair of roller bearings are mounted in spaced relation internally of the sleeve, with a grease reservoir being defined in the space between adjacent roller bearings. The roller bearings have an outer race mounted in a stationary position on the internal wall of the sleeve. Rolling elements are disposed between the kingpin end peripheries and the respective races for rolling surface contact with the peripheries of respective kingpin ends and races to provide low friction oscillatory movement of the steering spindle knuckle with respect to the axle end. The sleeve is a portion of a bearing cartridge which carried double seals at one end to engage the kingpin end to retain grease in the bearing and to prevent entry of foreign material into the bearings.

    • A lubrication system is set forth for a universal joint. A cross of the universal joint has four trunnions extending therefrom along two mutually perpendicular lines. Bearing cups are rotatably received on the ends of the trunnions and the cups, in turn, are held by universal joint yokes. Lubrication passages extend from a central portion of the cross outwardly to cavities located at the ends of the trunnions. A passage extension extends substantially through each cavity from the lubrication passage toward the end of the trunnion. A lubricant retainer is of generally inverted U-shaped configuration and extends over the passage extension. The retainer has openings near the bottom of the cavity and is centered in the cavity by a flange on the passage extension or by an outer flange at the edge of the retainer. The retainer prevents air from being trapped in the bottom of the cavity so that the cavity will always be filled with lubricant.

    • A universal joint includes a pair of yokes each having a pair of yoke arms with bores therein. Projecting portions of a trunnion cross extend into the bores of the yoke arms, and a number of bearings are arranged between the projecting portions of the trunnion cross and bearing sleeves which are secured within the yoke arm bores. An elastic seal extends over the radially outward end of each bore relative to the joint axis of rotation so as to close the outward sides of the bores and cover end faces of the projecting portions of the trunnion cross. A supply of lubricant can be contained between each end face and seal to be directed toward the bearings during operation of the joint, as a result of pressure exerted on the lubricant supply by the seal.

    • In order to improve the lubrication of relatively moving parts of machinery, in particular of bearings carrying rotating shafts, there is provided a lubricant reservoir adjacent to the bearing in which a movable transport member is located. The transport member may be, for example, a spring, one end of which is attached to the shaft rotating in the bearing so that the centrifugal force imparted to the spring causes its free end to enter into the lubricant reservoir whereupon, when the shaft is slowed down or stopped, the elasticity of the spring causes its return to a rest position, during which lubricant is positively displaced in the direction of the bearing. The motion of the transport member may also be effected by other external influences, for example by a magnetic field.
