    • When intake air temperature is higher than temperature in a predetermined normal temperature region, an ECU (25) controls a variable valve timing mechanism (24) so that the timing of closure of an exhaust valve (9) is adjusted to the spark retardation side, and thereby the amount of high-temperature internal EGR gas is reduced to avoid too early ignition. In medium load operation and high load operation, the ECU (25) sets the amount of spark retardation at the closure timing of the exhaust valve (9) to be greater than that in low load operation. In the medium load operation performed in a medium rotation speed region and a high rotation speed region, the rotation speed of an electric motor (16) is increased to raise supercharging pressure by a supercharger (17). In the high load operation in a high rotation speed region, the ECU (25) controls both the electric motor (16) of the supercharger (17) and an EGR control valve (22) in such a way that the higher the intake air temperature detected by a temperature sensor (26) is, the higher the supercharging pressure is and the greater the external EGR gas amount is.
