    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage of an attachment without additionally providing a new mechanism.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for controlling a machine tool which includes a machine tool body 5, a ram supported movably to the machine tool body 5, a main shaft supported rotatably on the ram, a drive shaft which is detachably mounted on the tip of the ram and rotates according to the rotation of the main shaft, an attachment 8 having a tool provided on the drive shaft, and an NC device 21 which performs numerical control on the basis of machining data, to machine a workpiece. In the method, at least either the protruding amount of the ram or the feed amount is lessened if a stress on the attachment is larger than the allowable stress of the attachment, on the basis of information on machining conditions consisting of the diameter of the tool, depth of cut and feed amount of the tool and the protruding amount of the ram, shape of the attachment and the material of the workpiece.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent automatic machining work from generating a failure while a tool from damage, by holding the tool so as to race for a main spindle, if excessive torque of predetermined value or more is applied to the cutting tool during its machining in a machine tool, and detecting abnormality of the tool. CONSTITUTION:A torque limiter 1, holding a tool 13, is mounted to a machine tool main spindle 20, performing cutting work. If excessive torque is applied to the tool 13, it rotates at a speed lower than that of the main spindle 20 or stops by racing the main spindle 20 and a torque limiter main unit 11 for a tool supporter 12. As a result, the tool 13 relaxes its excessive stress. This is because a ball 16 is dislocated from a recessed part 15 in the tool supporter 12 continuing to rotate and repeats to advance into the next recessed part 15, and a vibration is generated when this ball 16 advances into the recessed part 15. A device, converting this vibration into an electric signal by a vibration detector 2 and inputting the electric signal to a comparator 6 through an ampli fier 3, band pass filter 4 and an envelope detection circuit 5 to be compared with a preset value, detects abnormality of the tool 13.

Variation rate of revolutional torque of the ball screw shaft is thereby moderated so that stable feeding operation having high precision can be attained.

When the torsion amount exceeds torque within the allowable extent of a tap 10, the rotation of the tap 10 is once stopped and then reversed so that the tap 10 is operatively withdrawn. Thus, the tap 10 can be prevented from breakage automatically to provide high efficiency and accuracy tapping.
