    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a configuration for engaging a pinion with a ring gear on an engine side with low noise immediately before engine rotation is reversed or is stopped when the engine is automatically stopped.
      SOLUTION: A starter 11 can individually operate a pinion actuator 14 for making the pinion 13 plunge into the ring gear 23 on the engine 21 side to engage them with each other and a motor 12 for rotating the pinion 13. At automatic stop of the engine 21, every time a pulse is input to an ECU 20 from a crank angle sensor 25, angular velocity or engine speed at next pulse timing is predicted. A process of determining whether or not this pulse is a final pulse in the normal rotation based on whether or not the predicted value of the angular velocity or engine speed is a negative value is repeated. When the final pulse in the normal rotation is determined, the pinion actuator 14 is operated to make the pinion 13 plunge into the ring gear 23 on the engine 21 side and engage them with each other.
