    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means in a compression self-ignition engine positively injecting a desired amount of fuel at a desired timing during an NVO period. SOLUTION: In a low ration, low load region, an engine is operated by an HCCI mode for igniting fuel by compression self-ignition by a PCM 30, and in a high rotation region or a high load region, the engine is operated at an SI mode for igniting fuel by spark ignition. In this engine, in the HCCI mode, the NVO period in which an intake valve 11 and an exhaust valve 12 are both closed is provided near an exhaust compression top dead center, and during the NVO period, NVO injection for promoting compression self-ignition is performed. In the NVO injection, the fuel injection amount is increased by raising fuel pressure in a fuel injection valve 18 more as the engine load is lower.
