SOLUTION: In the electron source, a cathode having an electron emission part is pinched for jointing by tips of two filaments each connected with two conductive terminals fitted to an insulator, and the other end of the cathode different from the electron emission part is fixed to the insulator, the two filaments in two-time symmetry with respect to a center axis of the two filaments. Preferably, an end different from the electron emission part of the cathode is fixed to the insulator through a metal material brazed to the insulator, or more preferably, the filaments have curved parts.     • PURPOSE:To suppress generation of ions which collide with the emitter and thereby extend the life thereof by setting a mesh electrode arranged nearer to the emitter of electron gun to a positive voltage a little higher than the voltage of anode electrode. CONSTITUTION:Electrons emitted from the emitter of a field emission type electron gun are accelectrated by the acceleration field formed between an anode 3 at the earth potential and a leadout electrode 2 and are extracted toward the lower side. A mesh electrode 5 having a high rate of electron beam transmission opening is provided through an electric insulator 4 at the area opposing to the emitter 1 located above the anode 3 and a positive voltage in several volts to ten odd of volts is applied to the anode 3 from a DC power source 6. Thereby, generated positive ion is returned by the electric field formed in the space and it is no longer accelerated toward the emitter by the electron acceleration field. As a result, the emitter is protected from collision with ions.
