    • A rotational coupling device, comprising:
      a hub (22) configured for coupling to a shaft for rotation with said shaft about an axis of rotation;
      a rotor (26) supported on said hub and configured for rotation relative to said hub about said axis of rotation, said rotor defining a radially extending wall (106) and a chamber (134) on one side of said radially extending wall surrounding said hub, said chamber defining a sump containing a fluid;
      an armature (30) supported on said hub for rotation therewith and disposed within said chamber, said armature axially spaced from said radially extending wall of said rotor;
      a first clutch plate (36, 40) disposed axially between said radially extending wall of said rotor and said armature, said first clutch plate coupled to said hub for rotation therewith, but axially movable relative to said hub;
      a second clutch plate (34, 38, 42) disposed axially between said radially extending wall of said rotor and said armature, said second clutch plate coupled to said rotor for rotation therewith, but axially movable relative to said rotor;
      a field shell (48) disposed about said hub on an opposite side of said radially extending wall of said rotor from said armature, said field shell housing a conductor (50) therein; and,
      a first tube (44) having a first end submerged in said fluid and extending through a first aperture (180) in said armature, rotation of said armature drawing fluid through said first tube and onto said first and second clutch plates.

    • Energization of an electric coil 45 produces flux for attracting an armature 40 of a clutch 25 into engagement with a rotor 37 in order to couple an input shaft 12 to an output pulley 13. When the coil 45 is de-energized, two angularly spaced permanent magnets 55,56 pull the armature 40 away from the rotor 37 and into engagement with fixed pole pieces 60,61 which cause a braking torque to be applied to the output pulley 13. The magnets 55,56 are located closely adjacent one another and only along a short arc of the armature 40 in order to enable the flux of the coil 45 to overcome the flux of the magnets 55,60 and effect easy release of the brake and engagement of the clutch when the coil 45 is energized.

    • An electromagnetic clutch includes a rotation transmission member supported by an input shaft portion via a bearing. The rotation transmission member includes a movement regulating portion having abutment portions that abut against the bearing. The clutch further includes first and second spring members that bias an armature toward a braking member, and a connecting member overlaid on the movement regulating portion. The connecting member has first holes at portions facing the abutment portions, and second holes at portions facing regions between the abutment portions. One-end portions of the first and second spring members are attached to the armature. First fixing members inserted into the first holes fix the other-end portions of the first spring members to the connecting member. Second fixing members inserted into the second holes fix the other-end portions of the second spring members to the connecting member and fix the connecting member to the movement regulating portion.
