摘要： A vehicle wheel brake system (9) for a wheel suspension assembly has an anti-lock braking system ('ABS') to provide a higher resolution brake apply and brake release relative to an ABS system having a single, fixed brake disc. The brake system comprises a mounting hub (14) for a road wheel mounted on the wheel suspension assembly for rotation about a rotational axis. At least two slidable brake discs (38, 41) are mounted to slide axially along the hub between braking and off-brake positions and provide signals when the wheel condition is within preset parameters relative to the speed of the vehicle. A brake actuator system is operable manually and is operable automatically by the ABS controller to operate the caliper and a frequency of brake apply and with release of at least double the frequency of brake apply and release of a fixedsingle brake disc system.

摘要： An actuation system includes a magnetostrictive pump assembly (12) to operate a fluid ram (14) such as a brake cylinder connected to an actuator such as a brake (pad 20). A first accumulator (30) is connected to an input of the fluid ram (14) to store a fluid which actuates the fluid ram (14). A second accumulator (34) is similarly connected to an output of the fluid ram (14) to receive the used fluid after actuation of the fluid ram (14). The magnetostrictive pump assembly (12) is connected between the first accumulator (30) and second accumulator (34), to transfer the fluid from the second accumulator (34) to the first accumulator (30) such that the fluid is maintained at a high pressure for activation of the fluid ram (14). As the magnetostrictive pump assembly (12) reacts essentially instantaneously, any delay between actuation or deactivation is practically eliminated. Further, although the displacement of the pump (12) is relatively small, it can be cycled at extremely high frequencies to provide substantial pumping capacity for immediate brake activation.

The system comprises: a simulator which co-operates with the main brake cylinder; a pressure source commanded by an electronic control unit and used for applying pressure to vehicle wheel brakes capable of being connected via at least one hydraulic link to the main brake cylinder, said link(s) being closed off if necessary by separator valves; a device for detecting the driver's desire to decelerate; an inlet and outlet valve connected upstream of each wheel brake; and wheel sensors to determine the rotational characteristics of the vehicle wheels. In order to improve the precision with which the brake pressure can be adjusted in a system of this type, particularly in the low pressure range, it is proposed that the pressure source should take the form of at least one continuously adjustable piston-cylinder unit (9), the pressure chamber (10) of which can be connected both to the main brake cylinder (2) and to the wheel brakes (7, 8).
