    • A brake assembly (14) for a motor, the brake assembly (14) comprising a stack of brake elements (15; 15 a , 15 b ), at least one of which is rotatable with an output shaft (13) of the motor, in use, and at least one of which is non-rotatable relative to a housing (10), and actuator means (20, 21, 22, 23, 24) controlling the magnitude of a compressive load applied to the brake elements (15; 15 a , 15 b ), wherein the brake elements are provided, at least in part, with a surface coating which raises the coefficient of friction of the brake elements to a value greater than 0.2. The invention also relates to a brake assembly comprising a plurality of brake elements (15; 15 a , 15 b ) and an electromagnetic actuator (20) arranged to permit control of a compressive load applied to the brake elements (15; 15 a , 15 b ), wherein the actuator (20) includes a winding (21) located such that the brake elements (15; 15 a , 15 b ) are accessible without requiring removal of the winding from the motor.

    • A disc brake or clutch unit (10) comprising a rotor disc (12) having a fixed reaction member (21,23) on each side of the rotor disc (12) with the reaction members fixed in axially spaced relationship by connecting means (24,25) extending axially in position radially outwardly from the rotor disc. A pair of moveable reaction members (27,28) positioned between each side of said rotor disc (12) and one of the second fixed reaction members with the relatively moveable annular reaction members connected to each other a fixed axial distance apart by connecting means (29,30) extending axially and positioned radially outwardly from the rotor disc (12). Spring means (35) are positioned between said a first axially moveable reaction member (27) and a relatively fixed reaction member (23) for biasing the moveable reaction member (27) into fictional engagement with the disc (12). The fixed reaction member (23) and a moveable reaction member (28) forming an annular pressurized chamber (38) which when pressurized causes the moveable reaction members (28) to move axially away from the rotor discs to compress the spring means (35) and disengage the annular axial moveable reaction members (27) from the discs (12).
