    • Improved brake assembly which may be utilized to automatically brake a driven shaft or the like. The brake assembly (18) includes a rotatable brake disc (26) about which a fixed brake pad (27) on one side of the disc and a movable brake pad (28) on the opposite side of the disc are automatically actuated to engage and disengage the disc. The actuating means includes a hydraulic ram assembly (40) incorporating a piston (41) biassed by a coil spring (43) towards the engaged position. An actuating lever (37), connected to the ram, rotates the movable brake pad, which, by means of complementary mating ramp faces or helical inserts (34) received within the complementary annular recesses (32, 33) urges the brake pad into engagement with the rotatable brake disc.

    • A rotory transmission unit which comprises an input ramp plate (23), an output ramp plate (22), a number of displaceable elements (26) interposed between the ramp plates, a brake means to apply a brake torque to the output ramp plate and an arrestor (27) which is arranged to apply a torque load to the input ramp plate (23).
      The arrestor (27) is designed to operate by applying a continuous brake torque to the input shaft (ll) and the brake means is designed to be operated by the relative rotation of the input ramp plate (27) with respect to the output ramp plate (22).
      The torque applied by the arrestor (27) to the input shaft (ll) is not sufficient to prevent rotation of the shaft, however, is sufficient to dampen the fluctuations in the drive applied to the input shaft.

    • A disc brake, particularly suitable for use in tractors and like vehicles, is disclosed. Balls (11) are located in complementary inclined recesses (12) in a pressure plate (10) and in an adjacent end wall (4) of the brake housing (2). The brake is actuated by radial movement of the pressure plate (10), which produces a camming effect as the balls (11) tend to ride out of the recesses (12), so that the pressure plate (10) moves axially to urge a rotatable friction disc (5) into engagement with a surface (8) of the housing (2). Pilot pins (15 and 16) engage with lugs (17) on the pressure plate (10), constraining it against angular movement, so that when on application of the brake the pressure plate (10) engages the friction disc (5), the pressure plate is prevented from being carried round with the friction disc, ensuring that no servo effect takes place.

The pressing positioning member (80) presses the base plate (35) in the direction away from the inner-side rotating-direction movement restricting portion (16) to position the base plate (35) relative to the carrier (5) in the rotating direction.
