    • A digital video cassette recorder (350) operates by the selection of predetermined replay speeds and the allocation of specific locations within each track from which data may be reproduced. These specific track locations are utilized during recording to place advance television image data for reproduction during "Trick Play" operation. The "Trick Play" image data (353) is also reproduced during normal playback but may not be utilized. The specific track locations are selected to facilitate "Trick Play" operation at a plurality of speeds in both forward and reverse directions. Since the advanced television signal comprises a plurality of predicted frames, transition from "Trick Play" to normal speed replay requires a control function which is responsive to the reproduction, at normal replay speed, of an interframe coded frame. Various methods of reproduced image transition are used for selecting both to and from "Trick Play" reproduction.

    • Method of synchronizing audio and video information wherein standard motion picture techniques may be used to form a master finished audio track accurately synchronized with a recorded video signal. A standard master edited video tape is recorded (12) with a conventional SMPTE time code or other code identifying each of the recorded frames. The video signal and time code are transferred to a first sprocketed magnetic film (29) which operates at standard motion picture speeds. This film serves as a "work" print which is then used to build a plurality of audio tracks which are synchronized with the video information appearing on the work print. Thereafter, the audio tracks are mixed to form a master finished audio track on a second sprocketed magnetic film. The SMPTE time code is transferred from the work print to the second sprocketed magnetic film in synchronism with the master finished audio track. The master audio finished track is then transferred in synchronism to the master edited video tape with the stored SMPTE time codes being used (14) to drive the audio film and video tape in synchronism.

    • A method and apparatus for automatic high speed inspection of information recorded on magnetic video tape (30) to determine if the original recording has been altered by erasure or overrecording has been added to in a previously unrecorded portion of the tape. To facilitate the inspection, a low frequency signal is added to the audio track of the tape (30) at the time the original recording is made. Inspection consists of sensing the tape's (30) video control track and the audio track containing the added low frequency signal while rewinding the tape at high speed. During rewind, a sensor (32) positioned on the backside or non-oxide coated surface of the tape (30) receives signals from both the video control track and audio track. The detected signals are processed by a fault detection circuit (22) where they are analyzed to determine the tape speed, control track pulse amplitude, audio signals amplitude, control track pulse pattern, and low frequency audio signal pattern. A tape (30) without defects is indicated by the simultaneous absence or presence of both the added low frequency audio track signal and video control track signal. Appearance of either signal alone signals a defect in the tape (30) and its location is stored by a computer (24). At the end of the inspection, the computer (24) prints out (26) the number, type(s) and location(s) of the defect(s).

    • Ghost-suppression circuitry is connected for receiving composite video signal from the video detector of a television receiver front-end. The response to that composite video signal, in which response at least one ghost is suppressed, is supplied to the recording electronics of a video tape machine, which uses helical scanning to record that response together with a sound signal supplied from the sound detector of the television receiver front-end. This is done instead of supplying the recording electronics of the video tape machine with the composite video signal as taken directly from the video detector of the television receiver front end. This deghosts the images on the viewing screen of a television receiver producing television images in response to television signal supplied from the video tape machine during playback from the recorded video tape, without having to rely on ghost-suppression circuitry in this television receiver. This obviates the problem that the performance of any ghost-suppression circuitry in this television receiver will be impaired because the time-base stability of the ghost cancelation reference signal in the composite video signal reproduced during playback from the recorded video tape is poor, owing to headswitching during helical scan.

    • A video time-shifting system having a continuous recording track accessed by separate, asynchronous read and write facilities initiates video program playback anywhere in the program while continuing real time recording, thus providing VCR-like program control like PAUSE/RESUME, REWIND, and FAST FORWARD. Memory (156) stores information relating to various program points so that even after multiple PAUSE commands, the system automatically provides correct program re-entry. Preferably, the storage means is a continuous recording track in a magnetic disk drive. To prevent video program data recording or reproducing discontinuities, the system preferably incorporates automatic switching between plural write heads (124, 126, 132, 134), each associated with different recording tracks, to link the different recording tracks into a single, continuous track. Although analog program information may be stored, preferably digital storage along with data compression (105, 107) is used to increase recording capacity. The system preferably further includes a video display generator (144) to output program-related visual indicia (202, 242, 244), and symbols (206, 212, 214, 240, 246) relating to one or more points in the program and/or the time-shifted version thereof, to the display device.

    • An on-line video editing system includes interface software (132) containing in preferably text file format protocol information and a mapping of the architectural functions of peripheral devices that a user can control via the editor. The system permits simultaneous control of up to 48 serial devices as well as 8 GPI controlled devices (12). Further, the interface software (132) enables a user to input a desired edit effect.
