    • A digital video cassette recorder (350) operates by the selection of predetermined replay speeds and the allocation of specific locations within each track from which data may be reproduced. These specific track locations are utilized during recording to place advance television image data for reproduction during "Trick Play" operation. The "Trick Play" image data (353) is also reproduced during normal playback but may not be utilized. The specific track locations are selected to facilitate "Trick Play" operation at a plurality of speeds in both forward and reverse directions. Since the advanced television signal comprises a plurality of predicted frames, transition from "Trick Play" to normal speed replay requires a control function which is responsive to the reproduction, at normal replay speed, of an interframe coded frame. Various methods of reproduced image transition are used for selecting both to and from "Trick Play" reproduction.

    • A helical scan segmental tape recording/reproducing apparatus for recording digital television signals includes a headwheel (fig. 1) with clustered heads and an active scan period which is less than 330` whereby a buffer storage (53) is used for altering the timing of digital signals during recording and reproducing in order to elaborate a continuous signal during reproducing in spite of the scan gap and in order to create a space on the tape for recording time compressed audio signals in time division multiplex with the digital television signal. The buffer storage (53) also permits shuffling of data words within a data block to facilitate data error concealment during reproducing. Diametrically opposed head clusters providing an active scan period which is less than 180` may be also used.

    • When an audio signal is reproduced from a video tape (1) on which audio signals having two kinds of effective samples, i.e. (800 and 801), in one field and forming 4,004 samples in five continuous fields are recorded on tilted tracks thereof, signal processing by which the samples reproduced by at least the first reproduction operation are all outputted from among the audio signals obtained by reproducing at least twice video signals of the same field during a speed change reproduction mode in which reproduction is made at least twice for an arbitrary field by a dynamic tracking head (2A), and by which samples by other reproduction are adaptively controlled so that the total sample number of five fields becomes not greater than 4,004 samples, is carried out by a deshuffling circuit of a first audio processing portion (21).
