摘要： A magnetic tape recording apparatus capable of recording digital video data sufficient for displaying a preferable image upon modified-speed reproduction in a long time mode. When recording video data for modified-speed reproduction (for example, 16 times-speed reproduction) while distributing the data at a trace position of a rotation head upon modified-speed reproduction, if in a long time mode, the number of recording times of the video data for the same modified-speed reproduction is increased and the number of sync blocks recorded at once is reduced as compared to a case when recording is performed in a standard mode. For example, in the standard mode, 6 sync blocks are recorded three times while in the long time mode, 4 sync blocks are recorded four times. The present invention can be applied to a recording/reproduction apparatus displaying a preferable image upon modified-speed reproduction.

In playback mode, the tape drive controller (7) decreases the videotape drive speed in case of a buffer usage greater than a normal value, and increases the videotape drive speed in case of a buffer usage smaller than the normal value. In record mode, tape drive controller (7) stops videotape from traveling temporarily in case of the network transmission speed being low and the buffer usage being below a normal value, and allows videotape to run again for recording when the buffer usage becomes above the normal value. Thus,the playback or recording speed by a tape drive device (3) can be adjusted in accordance with the network transmission speed.

摘要： An "all-in-one" encoder (100) that simultaneously produces MPEG-2 compliant fast forward, fast reverse and play bitstreams from a sequence of video frames in, e.g., 601-format video. The encoder (100) subsamples (104) the video sequence, extracting a plurality of frames from the video sequence and buffering (106) the subsampled frames. Simultaneous with the subsampling and buffering, the source frames are encoded within a real-time encoder (102), e.g., an MPEG-2 encoder. The buffered frames are recalled from the buffer and coupled to a second real-time encoder (108). The second encoder forms both the fast forward and fast reverse bitstreams using a time multiplexing technique wherein a group of pictures (GOP) for the fast forward stream can be formed followed by the compression of the same GOP having the frames organized in reverse order. As such, the compressed GOPs are represented by the fast forward and fast reverse bitstreams. The play, fast forward and fast reverse bitstreams for each GOP are organized into a file and stored on the mass storage device (e.g., disk drive array) of the file server.

摘要： The invention relates to the generation of a trick play information stream from a normal play information stream, so that they can be recorded together as a composite information stream on the record carrier, such that upon reproduction in a trick play reproduction mode, an information signal of sufficient quality, e.g. as regards visibility, can be obtained. One aspect of the invention lies in the generation of GOPs, each GOP comprising an I-frame retrieved from the original normal play information stream, and one or more so-called "empty P frames". Another aspect of the invention is the requirement of generating GOPs for the trick play information stream that have a constant bitcost per GOP. Again another aspect of the invention lies in the retrieval of the I-frame for the trick play information stream from the normal play information. More specifically, an I-frame is generated by retrieving from an I-frame included in the normal play information, the DC coefficient of the I-frame and a number of AC coefficients from that I-frame and generate the I-frame for the trick play information stream therefrom. More specifically, the number of AC coefficients for an I-frame of the trick play information signal depends on the difference between the DC coefficients of two subsequent I-frames in the normal play information from which the I-frame to be generated and the just previously generated I-frame for the trick play information signal have been derived.

摘要： Error protective data encoding for use with rotary head helical scan tape-recording is done by providing a first wordwise Reed-Solomon code along each recording track defined in first code words, and a second Reed-Solomon code defined in second code words. The first and second Reed-Solomon codes together form a product code format. Each second code word has a sequence of symbols across a plurality of contiguous tracks. The symbols of a single second code word have substantially uniform displacements between contiguous symbols both in a direction parallel to a length of the tape, and also in a direction perpendicular to a length of said tape. Each second code word extends substantially along a length of said tracks associated to the recording.
