    • The invention relates to a communications system comprising a transmitter (30) and a receiver (30) for transmitting transparent data over a connection (32) therebetween. The bandwidth (b2) assigned to the connection (32) is wider than the bandwidth (b1) actually required by a nominal bit rate of the transparent data so as to allow the use of a retransmitting protocol over the connection by enabling data transmission to stop and wait for retransmission of the incorrectly received frames while a transparent connection with a constant delay and a constant bit rate and a low BER is provided to the user. The incoming transparent data stream with a constant bit rate is buffered into a transmission buffer (300) and the frames received over the retransmitting connection (32) are buffered into a receiving buffer (310) which outputs the transparent data at the constant nominal bit rate.

    • Method and apparatus for activating and implementing adaptive countermeasures for wireless communication of Fast Ethernet data packets. A terminal for a wireless communication link includes a data packet receiver for receiving data packets, a packet formatting apparatus (228) coupled to the data packet receiver (212, 222) for formatting the data packets according to radio frames, a wireless transceiver coupled to the packet formatting apparatus (228) for communicating the radio frames over a wireless link, and a processor (230) coupled to the packet formatting apparatus for selectively activating a technique for altering a manner in which the radio frames are communicated over the wireless link. The method can include a step of selectively activating a technique for implementing flow control on the data packets. The broadcast device can monitor a bit error rate associated with radio frames communicated and, in response to the bit error rate, can activate the technique for altering the manner in which the radio frames are communicated. The broadcast device can also monitor a received signal level associated with radio frames communicated and, in response to the received signal level, can activate the technique for altering the manner in which the radio frames are communicated. The technique can alter error correction coding, spectrum spreading, power level, data transmission rate, or modulation scheme utilized for transmitting the radio frames. The packet formatting apparatus includes an adaptive countrermeasures apparatus having a plurality of selectively active paths, each path implementing a selected technique for altering the manner in which the radio frames are communicated.

    • The invention manages an input buffer (111) of a coder System (110), as shown in the Figure. The contents of the buffer (111) is monitored in a monitor (133), generating an underflow signal when the buffer is empty or has an amount below a threshold and an overflow signal when the buffer is full or above a threshold. As a result of this other parts of the codec (110) are controlled to accommodate differing data rates. This includes lengthing or shortening the sample frames received from the input buffer (111) by using a variable interpolation filter (145) and a controller (137), increasing or decreasing the sample rate per frame. Instead of variable interpolation filter (145) the interpolation filter may generate a fixed number of oversamples per input sample. In both ways, distortion due to differences in data rates is reduced.
