    • A hydraulically assisted steering system comprises a fixed displacement hydraulic pump fluidly connected to a steering gear to deliver pressurized fluid to the steering gear. The flow of pressurized fluid includes pressure pulses produced by the pump. A bypass valve diverts a portion of the flow of pressurized fluid away from the steering gear before reaching the steering gear. Valve control apparatus electrically connected to the bypass controls operation of the bypass valve. The valve control apparatus includes a piezoelectric element to which the pressure pulses are applied. The piezoelectric element produces electrical signals in response to the applied pressure pulses. The valve control apparatus controls operation of the bypass valve in response to at least one parameter of the electrical signals.

    • A hydraulic actuator for a hydraulic servomotor (4) is disclosed. The hydraulic servomotor (4) has a first chamber (5) and a second chamber (6) associated therewith. The hydraulic actuator is connected to a fluid source (2) and a fluid drain (3), and it comprises a valve assembly arranged between the fluid source (2) and the fluid drain (3) to control fluid pressures in the chambers (5, 6). At least one auxiliary valve (11) is fluidly connected between the valve assembly and the fluid drain (3), said auxiliary valve(s) (11) being of a kind which is normally closed in a de-energized state. In the case of a power cut off the auxiliary valve(s) (11) will close, thereby preventing fluid flow from the valve assembly towards the fluid drain (3). This causes a servomotor piston member (12) to be hydraulically locked in its instantaneous position, thereby locking the hydraulic servomotor (4). The valve assembly may be designed without taking the locking function into consideration.

It is determined if the engine of the vehicle is shut down. An electric motor applies power assist to turn the steerable wheels when the engine is shut down. An apparatus for turning steerable vehicle wheels includes a hydraulic power steering motor assembly connected with the steerable vehicle wheels. A pump connected with the power steering motor assembly is driven by an engine of the vehicle to supply fluid under pressure to the power steering motor assembly during operation of the engine. An electric motor connected with the steerable vehicle wheels applies power assist to turn the steerable vehicle wheels. A controller operates the electric motor to apply the power assist when the engine is shut down.
