    • A method of representing the topology of a complex call is disclosed in which the complex call is represented independently of any service which may have caused the current topology arrangement. Details of the current topology of the call as well as data about entities involved in the topology are available from up to four defined contexts. As a call progresses from a simple two party call (a simple call) to a complex call by invoking various complex call services, the topology of the call changes in time depending on the service or services which have been invoked. As the topology of a call changes, instances of particular contexts are either created, destroyed or merged depending on the change in topology and in accordance with predefined context definitions. A call processing architecture is disclosed based on the use of four defined contexts which allows complex call services to obtain details of the topology of a complex call as well as data about entities involved in the topology through the predefined contexts. Having current topology information as well as data about entities involved in the topology readily available in various predefined contexts permits service software to interface with the contexts as opposed to other service software.

    • A method of avoiding undesirable interferences between services in a telecommunications system that includes basic software (51) for a basic service and supplemental software for services supplemental to the basic service. The supplemental software is divided into action software (52) which acts solely on the basic service, and supplemental software (59) which acts on the remaining supplemental software. According to the invention, a supplemental service is represented by action elements. Combinations of action elements form nodes in a mathematical binomial tree. Only those combinations which correspond to interference, i.e. an undesirable behaviour, between supplemental services will form a number of structures, called interference event trees (55). Before a supplemental service can be executed, its action elements are compared with nodes in the interference event trees (55), with the intention of ascertaining whether or not the former coincide with action elements belonging to the nodes in the latter. Only those interference event nodes whose sets of action elements are equivalent with the set of action elements of the supplemental service or a set thereof are selected. An interference event node whose set of action elements is a subset of the action elements of a node that has already been chosen cannot be selected. Interaction software (58) belonging to selected nodes in the interference event trees is added to the basic software (51).

    • A method and apparatus for providing a telephone operating company with the ability to rapidly deploy advanced services into a public switched telephone network includes a programmable service node interacting with a programmable switch matrix. The call processing of a call (associated with one or more ports) on the programmable switch matrix is controlled externally when particular triggering criteria is met (i.e., the call requires or desires external control). When the triggering criteria is met, the service node outputs a new call event notification message over a communications link to an external unit and receives one or more messages over the same link. Call control processing is achieved through this high-speed communications link between the programmable switch matrix and the external unit using a communications protocol defining a comprehensive set of primitives (instructions) for call manipulation and control at the programmable switch matrix which are received by the programmable service node. The one or more received messages include instruction data for instructing the programmable switch matrix to perform one or more actions associated with the service call, such as connecting a port with another port within the switch matrix. The service node processes the instruction data and instructs the switch matrix to perform the appropriate action(s).
