    • An agent (50) in a distributed computing environment includes a negotiation management module (NMM) (51) which is invoked when it is necessary to form a contract with another external agent for providing a particular service, a resource management module (RMM) (52) which manages resources controlled by the agent, a service/task management module (SMM) (53) which launches and controls services and tasks associated with the agent, and a communications module (CM) (56) which is the focus for both incoming and outgoing messages to and from the agent. The agent (50) is also provided with an acquaintance model (AM) (55) which provides an overall picture of services offered by other agents in the environment and a self model (SM) (54) which maintains a representation of the services which the agent (50) can itself provide. When requested to provide a service, the NMM (51) negotiates with the requestor, via the CM (56), on the basis of information provided by the RMM (52) relating to resources available to the agent (50). When a contract is finalised, the RMM (52) oversees the management of the resources controlled by the agent and the SMM (53) controls the services and tasks required by the agent (50) to complete the contract.

    • A system architecture offering services comprises a Connection Management, a Service Management, and a Communication Session Management CSM. A special adaptation software forms a description of the logical configuration of the communication between the parties of the service, and a description of the status of the connection organs, which describes the physical connection between the subscribers or subscriber and a legacy exchange. In response to the system service request by the telecommunication network, the Service Management gives a description of the desired communication status which corresponds to the requested service of the communication status, and the description of the state of the connection organs. The Communication Session Management CSM determines what kind of communication status corresponds to the given connection status, utilizing the description of the status of the connection organs that has been transmitted to it. In response to the connection status, the Connection Management makes the connections in such a way that a connection corresponding to the desired service will be created.

    • A services provision system, for use in providing information services over one or more communications networks, has a software infrastructure divided into domains (101, 103, 104, 106). Each domain has an intelligent software agent (102, 107, 109, 110) and this community of agents sits in a computing environment represented in each domain by a DPE kernel (105). The community of agents co-operates to provide service and service management functionality to a user. At least one of the agents (102, 107, 109, 110) is reconfigurable to change the functionality the system makes available. Reconfigurability is based on the use of a plurality of reusable software modules, the agent reconfiguring by selecting a new combination of modules. The software modules themselves incorporate rules, or policies, which determine process steps offered by the modules at run-time. These policies are external to the modules and may be loaded at run-time, allowing dynamic modification to functionality of the system. The system as a whole offers functionality associated with using services, providing them and managing them and the reconfigurability allows it to offer the different types of functionality in an efficient way. It also allows access control to functionality at different levels with particularly good security against fraudulent use.
