    • The present invention relates to a programmable safety unit (10) for monitoring and controlling safety functions of an hazardous environment, e.g. comprising hazardous machines and/or processes and/or material or similar and safety equipment associated with said hazardous environment. It is adapted for external mounting, and it comprises a programmable safety module part (20) and a connection part (30), said programmable safety module (20) and said connection part (30) being interconnectable allowing mounting/demounting and replacement of said programmable safety module (20) and/or said connection part (30). The safety unit (10) further comprises at least two connections (211, 212, 311, 312) which are programmable as safe inputs and/or outputs for direct connection to at least a number of the safety functions or equipment of the hazardous environment and e.g. the machines and/or processes.
