摘要： Detection and quantification of microbial colonization and biofilm formation on orthopaedic explants would be important for deciding treatment interventions at the time of surgery. Methods and Systems for such treatments are shown that utilize various steps and kits to quickly generate con focal laser-scanning microscopy (CLSM) images to allow for the detection and quantification. The explants are prepared by applying antibodies of both gram- positive and gram-negative for at least one period of time.

摘要： A method for detecting inflammation in the urinary tract or urethra of a patient, especially urethritis, comprises a) contacting leucocytes obtained from a urine sample provided by the patient with a luminescence reagent which emits light on reaction with an oxidant; b) adding an activator to the mixture of leucocytes and luminescence reagent; c) continuously monitoring and/or measuring light emitted by the luminescence reagent over a predetermined time period commencing before and ending after the addition of the activator. The light emission is indicative of the presence or absence of inflammation in the urinary tract or urethra of the patient. The urine sample is preferably a sample of first pass urine. The method makes possible a diagnosis especially of urethritis and, in particular, urethral infections selected from Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae , which can be carried out quickly without invasive procedures. A diagnostic kit for carrying out the method, comprising a luminescence reagent which emits light on reaction with an oxidant, an activator and a library of standard signature light emission curves is also disclosed.

摘要： A gene is successfully transferred at a high efficiency into primate embryonic stem cells by using a simian immunodeficiency virus vector (SIV) having been made into the pseudo type with the use of VSV-G protein which is a surface glycoprotein of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Thus, the simian immunodeficiency virus vector for gene transfer into primate embryonic stem cells is provided. Gene transfer into primate embryonic stem cells using the above-described vector is useful in embryological studies, studies on diseases, clinical application, experimental models, etc. in the primates. Moreover, it is useful in assaying and screening genes and reagents for tissue- or cell-specific differentiation which are useful in acquiring desired differentiated cells or differentiated tissues from embryonic stem cells.

摘要： Novel bactericidal antibodies against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B ("MenB") are disclosed. The antibodies either do not cross-react or minimally cross-react with host tissue polysialic acid and hence pose minimal risk of autoimmune activity. The antibodies are used to identify molecular mimetics of unique eptitopes found on MenB or E. coli K1. Examples of such peptide mimetics are described that elicit serum antibody capable of activating complement-mediated bacteriolysis of MenB. Vaccine compositions containing such mimetics can be used to prevent MenB or E. coli K1 disease without the risk of evoking autoantibody.

摘要： The present invention is directed to methods, assays and compositions for implementing such methods and assays for assessing efficacy of individual components in multi-component vaccines and for assessing efficacy of a vaccine against a pathogen. In one aspect, the method of assessing efficacy of a vaccine against a pathogen is a quick assay that tests for an activity correlated with efficacy such as binding in an ELISA rather than requiring the time and expense of an assay that detects actual bactericidal activity. In another aspect, the method for testing the efficacy of an individual component in a multi-component vaccine includes obtaining an immune sample from a subject inoculated with the multi-component vaccine; blocking the portion of the immune sample that recognizes the individual component such as by addition of the individual component, and testing the efficacy of the immune sample to respond to the pathogen.
