    • As a result of manufacturing tolerances, turbochargers in internal combustion engines produce a noise which depends on the engine speed and, depending in the charger, is disturbing mainly in the lower kHZ range. The object of the invention is to reduce the sound of this background noise which occurs when the vehicle is in operation. According to the invention the air inlet duct (1) between the turbocharger and the internal combustion engine is internally provided with screens or walls (5) the openings (8) of which are at least the internal diameter of the inlet (3) and of the outlet (4) and align therewith. The spaces (10) between the screens (5) form for the air flowing therethrough resonance chambers which, by choosing different opening diameters (8) and/or different screen distances, can be tuned over a broadband for a damping of in excess of 20 dB(A) in the range from 1 kHZ to 5 kHZ. The reflection silencer is used in motor vehicles.

    • A butterfly valve noise suppressor (10) is provided for reducing the noise generated by a gas flow passing through an open butterfly valve having a disc (16) pivotally mounted in a valve housing (12) for rotation about a transverse axis between an open and a closed position thereof. The noise suppressor (20) includes a plurality of flat and perforated baffle plates (22) arranged in a cruciform configuration, mounted in a flow path immediately downstream of the pivotal disc, axially extending and thereby dividing the downstream flow path into four axial and quadrant cross-sectional segments (24). The gas flow passing the edge of the pivotal disc in the valve generates a flow turbulence to form an unsteady large wake downstream of the valve. This unsteady wake is the source of noise. The cruciform baffle plates (21) permit the gas flow to pass therethrough without obstruction thereto, while allowing the turbulence to communicate laterally through the perforation (26), thereby dissipating the wake unsteadiness to reduce noise. The butterfly valve noise suppressor according to the present invention provides a better acoustic result compared to a muffler used in a conventional butterfly valve, and is lighter, durable, simpler and more economical to manufacture.

    • An air resonator system for a vehicle has a variable volume to reduce noise expected at both high and low speeds. In one embodiment, a pair of necks (28, 32) communicate with chamber portions (30, 31). A valve (38) selectively blocks communication between the chamber portions (30, 31) and allows each of the necks to communicate with the relatively small volume chamber portions. This position is particularly good for reducing the high frequency noise expected at high engine speeds. The valve (38) is movable to a second position at which it allows communication between the two chamber portions and blocks communication between one of the necks and its respective chamber portion. The relatively large chamber volume provided at this position is particularly well suited for reducing the low frequency noise expected with low engine speed. Thus, a single air resonator system is provided which can be adjusted to accommodate noise at both high and low speeds.
