    • An air resonator system for a vehicle has a variable volume to reduce noise expected at both high and low speeds. In one embodiment, a pair of necks (28, 32) communicate with chamber portions (30, 31). A valve (38) selectively blocks communication between the chamber portions (30, 31) and allows each of the necks to communicate with the relatively small volume chamber portions. This position is particularly good for reducing the high frequency noise expected at high engine speeds. The valve (38) is movable to a second position at which it allows communication between the two chamber portions and blocks communication between one of the necks and its respective chamber portion. The relatively large chamber volume provided at this position is particularly well suited for reducing the low frequency noise expected with low engine speed. Thus, a single air resonator system is provided which can be adjusted to accommodate noise at both high and low speeds.

    • An intake sound generator for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, the internal combustion engine having an intake manifold for distributing a combustion mixture to a plurality of cylinders of the engine, and an engine throttle controlled by an electronic engine management system for regulating the flow of the combustion mixture into the intake manifold, the engine management system being coupled to an engine throttle lever whose position indicates the engine throttle position desired by a driver of the vehicle, and the intake sound generator comprising: a sound outlet port at an intake manifold; a first sound transmission tube connected to the sound outlet port and adapted to conduct engine-generated sound pulses from the intake manifold; sound receiving means coupled to the first sound transmission tube and operable to receive engine-generated sound pulses conducting along the first sound transmission tube; a sound throttle connected along the first sound transmission tube at a point intermediate between the sound receiving means and the sound outlet port, the sound throttle being operable to regulate engine-generated sound pulses conducted along the first sound transmission tube; and sound providing means operable to provide engine-generated sound pulses received at the sound receiving means into a vehicle cabin; wherein the intake sound generator is configured such that the sound throttle position varies in dependence on the position of the engine throttle lever and is independent of the engine throttle position.

    • An air turbine apparatus (10) for use with a combustion engine either as a muffler or as an air intake device is comprised of a housing (12) defining an expansion chamber (20) and an airfoil (50) positioned within the housing (12). The airfoil (50) includes a central aperture (52) extending longitudinally there through that is in fluid communication with both the inlet (18) and the outlet (16) of the housing (12). The airfoil (50) is configured to allow gases flowing through the inlet (18) to flow between the outer edge of the airfoil (50) and the housing (12) and through the aperture (52) of the airfoil (50). In addition, the air travelling through the housing (12) is caused to spin as it travels through the housing (12). This rotational flow increased the rate of flow of gases through the air turbine device (10). An induction tube (22) is provided between the airfoil (50) and the outlet (16) of the housing (12) to encourage turbulent flow of gases without restricting flow to produce a muffling effect and thus a dampening of noise from the combustion engine.
