    • A beverage dispenser for dispensing a carbonated beverage from a beverage source into a receptacle includes a housing defining an interior volume and having a first surface proximal to the beverage source and a second surface distal to the beverage source. The beverage dispenser further includes a conduit in fluid communication with the beverage source entering the first surface of the housing and terminating proximate the second surface of the housing. The dispenser also includes a multi-nodal flow rate controller disposed within the interior volume of said housing in contact with said conduit and a subsurface dispensing nozzle in fluid communication with the terminal end of the conduit. The flow through the conduit to the subsurface dispensing nozzle is compensated to maintain substantially hydraulic beverage flow within the conduit by adjusting the contact between the multi-nodal flow rate controller and the conduit.

    • A container filling apparatus (10) includes at least one source container (18) that contains a substance (20) and a reading mechanism (24) capable of reading data from a data indicator (30) on a receiving container (32) wherein the data indicator identifies data about the receiving container. The apparatus also includes a controller (22) that is connected to the reading mechanism. The controller (22) is programmed to determine when a dispensing condition is satisfied. The apparatus also has a dispenser (26) for discharging the substance into the receiving container (32) in response to a signal from the controller. The dispensing condition can be a match between data from the data indicator and the data stored for access by the controller (22). The source container (18) can also have a data indicator (19). The dispensing condition is then satisfied when the data from the source container data indicator matches the data from the receiving container data indicator.

    • A system and method for short-range ultrasonic detecting of a target is proposed herein to be used for example in a liquid-dispensing system such as those provided in home refrigerators. The system comprises a sensor assembly including a transmitter and a receiver positioned side by side so as to yield respective transmitting and receiving beams which overlap to define an asymmetrical shaped detection area, a controller coupled to both the transmitter and receiver to activate the transmitter and for receiving echoes indicative of the target from the receiver and to the dispensing system for opening a valve of the dispensing system when a target is detected. The proposed system eliminates the phenomenon of oscillation (decay time of the excitation signal) between the incoming and outgoing sound waves. Noises and false alarm rate minimization methods are implemented, including variable relevance zones and requiring a void of signal before excitation. An alternative sensing method and system is also proposed including generating an ultrasound beam under the dispenser; and triggering the opening of the dispenser when the ultrasound beam is cut.
