    • A friction-type draft gear assembly (10) includes a housing (12) having an open front and a closed rear end with a first and second rear portions (13, 15) and a pair of ledge members (14) disposed intermediate such first and second rear portions and enabling the draft gear assembly (10) to fit into a draft gear pocket of a predetermined length. A pair of tapered gravity wedges compensate for longitudinal slack and are held in place with a pair of leaf springs disposed between the rear lug and said gravity wedge.

    • A brake actuator assembly (40) for a railway vehicle braking system comprises a flexible elastomeric member (50) directly and sealably attached to a mounting member (80) employed for attaching the brake actuator assembly to the rigid structure of a braking system and to a push rod member (32) connected to the control linkage. The brake actuator assembly is connected to a source of fluid under pressure enabling inflation of the flexible elastomeric member and initiation of a braking sequence of the railway vehicle braking system. The brake actuator assembly of the present invention allows for improved control of the brake shoe forces including visual travel measurement indication which is especially desirable during light load conditions. Currently used brake assemblies employing cylinder type actuators may be retrofitted with the brake actuator assembly of the invention.

This pneumatic actuator (140, 180) generates a predetermined braking force responsive to the fluid pressure signal and further responsive to the load carried by the railway car as sensed by the sensor mechanism. Such predetermined braking force may be proportionally adjusted to variations in the load carried by the railway car.
