    • A brake actuator assembly (40) for a railway vehicle braking system comprises a flexible elastomeric member (50) directly and sealably attached to a mounting member (80) employed for attaching the brake actuator assembly to the rigid structure of a braking system and to a push rod member (32) connected to the control linkage. The brake actuator assembly is connected to a source of fluid under pressure enabling inflation of the flexible elastomeric member and initiation of a braking sequence of the railway vehicle braking system. The brake actuator assembly of the present invention allows for improved control of the brake shoe forces including visual travel measurement indication which is especially desirable during light load conditions. Currently used brake assemblies employing cylinder type actuators may be retrofitted with the brake actuator assembly of the invention.

    • Braking systems for railway cars are provided. A braking system defines a longitudinal axis, and includes a first brake assembly, a second brake assembly, and an actuator operable to generate a linear force, the actuator disposed proximate the second brake assembly. The braking system further includes a movable rod and a fixed rod extending between the first brake assembly and the second brake assembly. In some embodiments, the braking system further includes a lever and a slack adjuster disposed proximate the first brake assembly, the slack adjuster connected to the first brake assembly and the lever and operable to adjust a distance along the longitudinal axis between a reference point of the first brake assembly and a pivot point of the lever. In some embodiments, the braking system includes a strut connected to the second brake assembly, the actuator, fixed rod and movable rod connected to the strut.

    • A pneumatically controlled load compensating brake system for a wheel truck (21) is provided. The wheel truck includes a bolster (23) resiliently supported on a pair of side frames (25, 27) mounted on a spaced pair of axles (31, 33) having wheels at each end. The brake system includes a pair of brake beams (51, 57) extending across the wheel truck adjacent the axles with brake shoes at each end for engaging the wheels. An expandable pneumatic means (63) is supported on the bolster (23) and is inter-connected to the brake beams (51, 57) by a multiple lever system (77, 81, 93). The lever system is operable to move the beams relative to each other to press the brake shoes against the wheels upon pressurization of the expandable pneumatic means (63) by an empty and load valve (132). The empty and load valve (132) senses a change in load on the bolster (23) and is operable to change pressure to the pneumatic means (63) in response thereto.

    • A disc brake assembly for a railway truck is provided. The truck (10, 11) includes at least two wheel axle sets (22, 23) and brake discs (12, 13) mounted to the wheel axle sets (22, 23). Extending between the wheel axle sets (22, 23) is a longitudinally extending truck frame (20, 21). Also extending between the wheel axle sets (22, 23) and supporting the truck frame (20, 21) via primary springs (65) are equalizer beams (64) that further extend beyond the wheel sets (22, 23) and through an opening (70) in the truck frame (20, 21). Disc brake calipers (62) are mounted to the equalizer beams (64) with the caliper (62) engaging the brake discs (12, 13) of the wheel sets (22, 23). The assembly results in the brake discs (12, 13) and calipers (62) being unsprung. In other words, the brake discs (12, 13) and calipers (62) do not move relative to each other.

    • A rail vehicle bogie brake has a brake beam (4, 5), which at its end is provided with a brake block holder (8) having a brake block (9) for brake application against a tread of a wheel.
