    • A method is provided for operating a processing system having a space therein arranged to receive a gas and an electromagnetic field generating portion operable to generate an electromagnetic field within the space. The method includes providing a gas into the space, and operating the electromagnetic field generating portion with a driving potential to generate an electromagnetic field within the space to transform at least a portion of the gas into plasma. The driving potential as a function of time is based on a first potential function portion and a second potential function portion. The first potential function portion comprises a first continuous periodic portion having a first amplitude and a first frequency. The second potential function portion comprises a second periodic portion having an maximum amplitude portion, and minimum amplitude portion and a duty cycle. The maximum amplitude portion is a higher amplitude than the minimum amplitude portion. The duty cycle is the ratio of a duration of the maximum amplitude portion to the sum of the duration of the maximum amplitude portion and the duration of the minimum amplitude portion. The second periodic portion additionally has a second frequency during the maximum amplitude portion. An amplitude modulation of the second periodic portion is phase locked to the first continuous periodic portion.

    • An instrument for use in a joint replacement procedure. The instrument comprises a trial head (162) which corresponds to the head of an orthopaedic joint component having an upper surface defined by a curved surface and a bore formed in a lower surface. The instrument further comprises a trial connector (164) for connecting the trial head (162) to a stem part (12) of the orthopaedic joint component which is intended for location in the intramedullary cavity of a bone. The trial connector (164) can be fitted into the bore in the trial head (162) at a variable angular orientation. The instrument further comprises a rotating indicator (174) pivo tally coupled about a polar axis of the trial head (162) which is defined by the curved upper surface, the rotating indicator (174) being coupled to the trial connector (164) such that the rotational position of the rotating indicator (174) about the polar axis is indicative of the rotational position of the trial connector (164) within the bore in the trial head (162). The bore in the lower surface of the trial head (162) is eccentric of the polar axis and the connection between the trial connector (164) and the stem part (12) of the orthopaedic joint component is eccentric of the centre of the trial connector (164). A predetermined point on the rotating indicator (174) is indicative of the direction of maximum eccentricity of the trial head (162) relative to the connection between the trial connector (164) and the stem (12) of the orthopaedic component. Also disclosed is an assembly which comprises the instrument and an orthopaedic joint component which comprises a head part (20), a stem part (12) and a connector sleeve part (30).

    • An instrument (102) for positioning a cup component (104) of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis is described. The instrument includes an actuator (124) and a plurality of jaw members (152, 154, 156, 158) around a longitudinal axis. Each jaw member includes a mounting end (162), a gripping end (166) and a surface (174) between them. The gripping end has a transversely extending member (168) which can be received in a recess in a wall of a cup component and can displaced between a retracted position and a deployed position. The surface is inclined to the longitudinal axis of the instrument and curved in an outward direction away from the longitudinal axis. The actuator and the plurality of jaw members are capable of relative movement along the longitudinal axis of the instrument with the actuator in contact with the inclined surfaces of the jaw members so that said relative movement causes the jaw members to move between their retracted position and deployed position.

    • A cutting block (1) for fixing relative to a bone for guiding a saw blade during a step in an orthopaedic surgical procedure in which the bone is cut, comprises a body (2) having a top surface (6) for guiding a saw blade, and a top plate (3) which is connected to the body and which can move between a first position in which the top plate is spaced apart from the body and a second position in which the top surface of the top plate is contiguous with and an extension of the top surface of the body. The top plate has first and second resiliently deformable arms (15, 16) extending from it, spaced apart along the top plate, and the body has first and second recesses formed in it extending substantially perpendicularly to the top surface of the body. The first and second arms on the top plate are inserted in respective ones of the recesses so that the arms and the recesses define the path for movement of the top plate relative to the body between the first and second position. Each of the recesses has a profiled surface against which the respective deformable arm acts during movement of the top plate relative to the body between the first and second positions so as to cause the arm to deform, the deformation of each of the arms being greater when the top plate is in an intermediate position between the first and second positions than when it is in each of the first and second positions, so that the top plate is biased away from the intermediate position towards the first and second positions. Biasing of the arms to the first and second positions locks the top plate in either the first or second positions. The cutting block has the advantage of easier manufacturing, particularly as the numbers of components is reduced. Furthermore, it reduces the need for welding with the attendant heat distortion that can affect the final product. The cutting block is also easier to clean.
