    • A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) simulation load capable of simulating a reactive force of a patient's chest upon chest depression, the cardiopulmonary resuscitation simulation load comprising an active actuator (M) arranged to generate at least part of the reactive force, and a controller (CTRL) arranged to provide a control signal to the active actuator. A CPR simulation manikin comprising such a CPR simulation load is also proposed. Furthermore, a method for simulating a reactive force of a patient's chest during cardiopulmonary resuscitation by means of a simulation manikin, the method comprising: measuring a depression of a simulation manikin chest; calculating a resulting reactive force depending on the measured depression of the simulation manikin chest; applying the resulting reactive force to the patient's chest by means of an active actuator. With an active actuator the simulated reactive force may be more easily adjusted and the non-linear behavior of a true patient's chest can be accurately modeled.

    • A circuit comprises an array of memory cells (10). A plurality of sensing circuits (20), are coupled to the output (14) of respective memory cells (10), for comparing the output signal of the respective one of the memory cells (10) with a reference signal to form a data signal from the output signal from the respective one of the memory cells (10). A reference generator circuit (24, 26) forms the reference signal from a sum wherein each respective one of the memory cells (10) of the addressed group contributes a contribution that is a function of the output signal of the respective one of the memory cells (10). The contributions are equalized for output signal values at more than a saturating distance above the reference signal, and the contributions are equalized for output signal values at more than the saturating distance below the reference signal. In case of storage of multi- level data in the cells the distances from the central level to the saturation levels above and below the reference level are mutually different, with a ratio that corresponds to a ratio of the counts of cells that have been programmed to respective levels.

    • A recording device records marks in a track on a record carrier via a beam of radiation. The device has a focus servo unit for focusing the beam to a scanning spot on the track. A focus adjustment unit adjusts the focus servo unit in dependence on a focus offset, and determines the focus offset during recording as follows. The recording process (112) is suspended, and the scanning spot is moved (113) to a recorded part of the track near the location of the track to be recorded. Previously recorded marks are read using a multitude of focus offset settings (114) and subsequently a quality parameter of the scanning signal is measured (115). Finally the focus offset is calculated (117) in dependence on said measuring and focus offset settings. A record carrier may have a focus adjustment indicator indicating a focus adjustment setting to be applied during determining the focus offset.
