    • A recording device records marks in a track on a record carrier via a beam of radiation. The device has a focus servo unit for focusing the beam to a scanning spot on the track. A focus adjustment unit adjusts the focus servo unit in dependence on a focus offset, and determines the focus offset during recording as follows. The recording process (112) is suspended, and the scanning spot is moved (113) to a recorded part of the track near the location of the track to be recorded. Previously recorded marks are read using a multitude of focus offset settings (114) and subsequently a quality parameter of the scanning signal is measured (115). Finally the focus offset is calculated (117) in dependence on said measuring and focus offset settings. A record carrier may have a focus adjustment indicator indicating a focus adjustment setting to be applied during determining the focus offset.

    • A dual-stack optical data storage medium (10) for write-once recording using a focused radiation beam (9) having a wavelength λ of approximately 655 nm is described. The radiation beam enters through an entrance face (8) of the medium (10) during recording. The medium comprises at least one substrate (1, 7) with present on a side thereof:­ a first recording stack (6), named L0, comprising a write-once type L0 recording layer, said first recording stack L0 having an optical reflection value R L0 and an optical transmission value T L0 , a second recording stack (3), named L1, comprising a write-once type L1 recording layer, said second recording stack L1 having an effective optical reflection value R Lleff . The first recording stack (6) is present at a position closer to the entrance face (8) than the second recording stack. (3). A transparent spacer layer (4) is sandwiched between the recording stacks (3, 6). The reflection values R L0 and R L1 eff are within the following ranges: 0.12 ≤ R L0 ≤ 0.18 and 0.12≤ R L1eff ≤ 0.18 by which an improved sensitivity of the dual stack medium is achieved.
