    • A circuit (10) provides data needed to measure the electrical opacity of a particle (20), such as a blood cell passing through a Coulter type transducer (12). The circuit (10) includes a current source (22) for providing a conventional d.c. current through the sensing aperture (16) of the transducer (12), and an oscillator (24) for providing a high frequency current through the aperture (16). The oscillator (24) includes an active device (32) and a resonant circuit (34), and the aperture (16) is coupled in parallel with the resonant circuit (34). As a particle (20) passes through the aperture (16), the resistance of the aperture (16) increases, which increases the Q of the oscillator (24), whereby the oscillator (24) output signal (Fig. 3) is amplitude modulated in accordance with the increased Q. Multiple oscillators (F1, F2 ... FN) of different frequencies can be coupled in parallel with the transducer (12) through a coupling cirucit (54, 77 and 79), which connects each oscillator (F1, F2 ... FN) through a low impedance path and isolates each oscillater (F1, F2 ... FN) from signals having frequencies of the other oscillators.

    • A method and apparatus (320, 340, 360) for automatically and rapidly retrieving, counting and/or analyzing at least one selected population of cells or formed bodies, such as a white blood cell population and at least one subset thereof of a whole blood sample (322, 342) or portion thereof. A volume of a biological medium containing the white blood cells is prepared and at least one reactant (326, 346) specific or preferential at least to some selected biological cells is introduced thereto and rapidly mixed (384) for a short period of time. The opacity and/or volume parameter of the cells can be modified and the mixture is then counted and analyzed (332, 352, 416, 422) in one or more steps to obtain the desired white blood cell population and subset analysis. The biological sample can be a whole blood sample and the reactant can include or be a lyse or a monoclonal antibody bound to microspheres, which will bind to specific ones of the cells or a combination of lyse and microspheres with antibody bound thereto. The microspheres can be magnetic and the bound cells can be magnetically removed for retrieving and analyzing the remaining blood cell population.

    • In a debris detector for a particle counter (10), a particle (18), or transient debris passing through the sensing orifice (16) causes a voltage pulse occurs (fig. 3A). When debris lodges in or against the orifice (16) of the particle detector (10), a d.c. voltage shift occurs. The voltage at the orifice (16) is capacitively (34) coupled to an amplifier (36) and the output of the amplifier (36) is provided to an integrator (40). The integrated voltage (Fig. 3C) is applied to a comparator (42) to provide an output signal (Fig. 3D) whenever the integrated voltage (Fig. 3C) exceeds a reference voltage (Vref). The comparator (42) output signal (Fig. 3D) is provided to a delay circuit (44, 46) having a delay related to the time required for a particle (18) to pass through the orifice (16). If the comparator (42) signal (Fig. 3D) remains after the delay time, a debris alarm signal (Fig. 3E) is provided.
