    • A multi-port Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS), having a beam steering array to switch input light from one port into any one of a stack of output ports, but with the switch functionality doubled by using a polarization switching architecture which can deflect any of the switched beams in a plane perpendicular to the beam steering plane used by the WSS array. By this means, the port count is doubled, by having two stacks of ports disposed side by side in the switch. The beams are deflected to the desired port level in either of the stacks by means of a beam steering assembly, such as a one-dimensional MEMS array, and at the same time, any beam deflected to any of the port levels can be directed to either of the stacks by means of polarization switching components operative to divert the beams laterally between the two stacks.

    • A measurement device is presented being configured to be connectable to an analyzer unit (comprising a network analyzer) via at least one RF port connection. The measurement device comprises at least one measuring unit and at least one calibration and control unit connected to and integral with said at least one measuring unit. The calibration and control unit is configured to enable connection of the at least one measuring unit to the analyzer unit. The calibration and control unit comprises a number of terminals associated with a plurality of calibration loads of known RF reflection coefficients respectively and comprises a memory utility carrying recorded data indicative of said RF reflection coefficients and recorded data indicative of RF transfer coefficients of the calibration and control unit.     • An integrated tool is provided, having a tissue-type sensor, for determining the tissue type at a near zone volume of a tissue surface, and a distance-measuring sensor, for determining the distance to an interface with another tissue type, for (i) confirming an existence of a clean margin of healthy tissue around a malignant tumor, which is being removed, and (ii) determining the depth of the clean margin. The integrated tool may further include a position tracking device and an incision instrument. The soft tissue may be held within a fixed frame, while the tumor is being removed. Additionally a method for malignant tumor removal is provided, comprising, fixing the soft tissue within a frame, performing imaging with the hand-held, integrated tool, from a plurality of locations and orientations around the soft tissue, reconstructing a three-dimensional image of the soft tissue and the tumor within, defining a desired clean margin on the reconstructed image, calculating a recommended incision path, displaying the recommended path on the reconstructed image, and cutting the tissue while determining its type, at the near zone volume of the incision surface. The method may further include continuously imaging with the cutting, continuously correcting the reconstructed image and the recommended incision path, and continuously determining the tissue type, at the near zone volume of the incision surface.

    • A fiber optical device, whose wavelength profile can be dynamically controlled in real time by the application of control voltages. The device can be used as a fiber optical gain equalizer or a wavelength selective filtering device which is compact, polarization insensitive, and of low manufacturing costs. The device comprises a stepped transparent substrate, through which the input beam is passed. Within the optical paths of the stepped regions of the substrate, electronically variable phase shifting elements are located, each operative to change the phase of the light passing through its associated step, and thus effectively adding tunability to the height of each step. Planar liquid crystal elements may be used as these elements. The elements may be pixelated, each pixel preferably affecting the phase of the light passing through a fraction of the area of the associated step, such that the interference so can be used to vary the transmission through that step. The pixels thus effectively add tunability to the area of each step. Electronic control of the height and area of each step enables the generation and dynamic control of complex transmission profiles.
