    • A system and method for facilitating smart power meter monitoring are provided. The system for facilitating smart power meter monitoring includes a standards-based frame detector, a CDR, at least one 8b/10 encoder/decoder and data links to receive input signals and transmit output signals. The system provides for the conversion of incoming SerDes signals, like those that may be transmitted from an optical module, into UART signals that can be communicated to the smart power meter directly through a UART port of the meter. The method includes receiving SerDes signals from an optical module and converting the signals to UART signals. The UART signals are converted to comply with industry standard protocols for communication with the smart power meter. The UART signals are then transmitted to the smart power meter through the meter's UART port.

    • A thermal metal oxide varistor circuit protection device includes a housing (15) defining a cavity and a metal oxide varistor (MOV) (50) disposed within the cavity. The circuit protection device may further includes a first terminal (30 1 ) electrically attached at a first end to the MOV (50) by solder (55) and extending outside of the housing (15) at a second end. An arc shield (65) is disposed within the housing (15) between the first end of the first terminal (30 1 ) and the MOV (50). The circuit protection device may further includes a spring (70) configured to bias the arc shield (65) against a micro switch (35) having an indicator portion (35b) disposed at least partially outside of the housing (15). When a voltage surge condition occurs, the MOV (50) changes from a non-conductive state to a conductive state and current flows between the first terminal (30 1 ) and a second terminal (30 2 ), thus the heat generated by the current melts the solder (55) and the first end of the first terminal (30 1 ) electrically separates from the MOV (50).
