    • Apparatus (28) for picking up an object (13, 20) and measuring an attribute (weight, temperature, color, etc.) of the object while being transported from one conveyor (12) to another (40). In one embodiment the objects (13, 20) are grasped by a vacuum head (22) and the weight is determined by passing vacuum head (22) and its associated cam follower (86) over a cam (84) placed on a load cell (82). A computer (38) sorts the measured objects (20) into storage containers (A-H) based on the measured attribute by activating deflecting arms (42). A method for tarring the system is also disclosed. In some embodiments the objects (13, 20) are grasped by piercing probes such as an expandable needle (34), barbed needle (37), or screw (534), or are else clamped by tweezers (334) or a gear & fingers combination (635). In a final embodiment, an item is grasped by being frozen to a temperature controllable surface. Attribute of objects can also be determined by using a camera to capture a shape of the conveyed objects (20) for comparison to the reference files in the computer (38), a device for measuring the reflectance of the conveyed objects (20), a colorimeter, or a temperature sensor.

    • The present invention is directed to a weighing station (10) that comprises a positioning apparatus (140-170), a drive mechanism (90-130), and a scale apparatus (180-230). In one embodiment, the positioning apparatus (140-170) includes a plurality of partitions (160) that define a plurality of product compartments. The positioning apparatus (140-170) further includes a guide wall (70, 80) located beyond the exterior end of the partitions (160), with the guide wall (70, 80) defining a loading aperture where product (250) may be loaded into the weighing station (10) and a discharge aperture where product (250) is weighed and then exits the station (10). The drive mechanism (90-130) is coupled to the positioning apparatus (140-170) and is operable to move the partitions (160) and thereby move the product compartments so that the product compartments pass the guide wall apertures. The scale apparatus (180-230) is positioned at the leading edge of the discharge aperture in the guide wall and is operable to weigh product (250).
