    • Amphibious vehicle (10, fig. 1) power train comprises prime mover (26) driving marine propulsion unit (36) and a road transmission comprising speed change transmission (32), which may be a continuously variable transmission; and is mounted with both input and output shafts aligned perpendicular to both longitudinal and lateral axes of the vehicle. The power train may also comprise a transfer case (28, fig. 2) and a bevel gear box (30). The prime mover may be located longitudinally or transversely in the vehicle. At least one road wheel may be retractable above the water line for use on water, particularly where the vehicle is configured for planing. The transmission shafts may be vertical. Motor (110) drives a reverse gear for road use. Differential (34) may be provided where at least two road wheels are driven. The vehicle is suitable for a user (12, fig. 1) in a sit-astride position.

    • Amphibious vehicle (2, Fig. 1) has retractable road wheels (8, Fig. 1) to allow planing. Power to road wheels (8) is disconnected automatically as the wheels (8) are retracted. This may be achieved through a cafe (310) attached to suspension rocker arm (232) to disconnect dog clutch (33, Fig. 6) attached to the input shaft of differential (34, Fig. 6) as the wheels (8) are retracted; and vice versa. Retraction device (242) - shown as a hydraulic cylinder (244) - rotates rocker arm (232) about pivot (240). This in turn retracts wheel suspension assemblies (224), link arms (220), and relay members (216) and (218). These pull up lower suspension arms (214), to which wheel hubs (204) are fitted. The system may be fitted to a steered axle; indeed, the retraction cafe system may be fitted to any suitable retractable suspension system. A suitable power train is shown in Figure 3.

    • Amphibious vehicle (2, fig. 1) has road wheels (8) which are retractable to allow planing. Each wheel suspension has a gap (80) in the planing surface (20) of the hull. To reduce hydrodynamic drag and improve marine handling, covers (34) are provided which cover gaps (80) when the wheels are retracted. These covers may be hinged parallel to a longitudinal, or to a transverse, axis of the vehicle. The covers may be hung from suspension arms (40) or otherwise connected to hull (16). The covers may leave gaps (90); to cover these, a second embodiment comprises “barn door” double covers (92, 94, fig. 5). A third embodiment has a mechanical linkage (182, fig. 7), which biases cover (180) to overlay gap (90) on wheel retraction. The covers cover a small gap in the hull through which the suspension is retracted and are designed to reduce flutter or chattering of the cover when in the water at speed but not the wheels.
