    • A vertically aligning slackless drawbar for connecting adjacently disposed ends of a pair of railway freight cars together in a substantially semi-permanent manner. Such vertically aligning slackless drawbar comprises a first member (20) and a second member (50) pivotably and slideably coupled to each other with a pivot pin (14), preventing lifting of the body of such railway freight car from the bolster in a light aluminum railway freight car application. A predetermined clearance is designed between the adjacent ends of the first and second member to limit lateral movement of the second member in relationship to the first member in order to limit occurrence of jackknifing. The first member (20) is secured to a yoke (110)with the standard "F" pin (98). The yoke (110) is further secured between the rear lug (106) and a front lug (104) of a center sill (100) of a railway freight car. A pair of tapered gravity wedges (130) compensate for longitudinal slack and are held in place with a pair of leaf springs (16) disposed between the rear lug (106) and said gravity wedge (130).

    • A brake actuator assembly (40) for a railway vehicle braking system comprises a flexible elastomeric member (50) directly and sealably attached to a mounting member (80) employed for attaching the brake actuator assembly to the rigid structure of a braking system and to a push rod member (32) connected to the control linkage. The brake actuator assembly is connected to a source of fluid under pressure enabling inflation of the flexible elastomeric member and initiation of a braking sequence of the railway vehicle braking system. The brake actuator assembly of the present invention allows for improved control of the brake shoe forces including visual travel measurement indication which is especially desirable during light load conditions. Currently used brake assemblies employing cylinder type actuators may be retrofitted with the brake actuator assembly of the invention.

    • A serial train communication system employs a pair of ultrasonic tranceivers oppositely mounted at each end of railway car. Each ultrasonic transceiver is coupled to a controller and to an independent power source. The controller is further coupled to various apparatuses installed on the railway car and is capable of controlling operation thereof. A command signal sent from a locomotive cab travels between railway cars enabling control various apparatuses of such railway cars and status signals from such apparatuses may be attached to the railway car or to any such apparatus. In another embodiment, a single ultrasonic transceiver is insalled within an air brake pipe enabling communication within a mixed railway car configuration.
