    • An apparatus for making up of breaking out of two members having mating threaded connections, such as pipe joints or bolts for avoiding undesirable transverse forces relative to the two members during tightening (or loosening), thereby insuring the connection is made up (or broken out) by essentially pure torque loads. A power-driven lead tong rotatingly drives a first threaded member out of its axis. A back-up tong secures a second threaded member against axial rotation in response to the rotation of the first member. An interconnecting frame and isolation apparatus adapts the lead tong to the back-up tong in such a manner that their relative tendencies to rotate about the threaded members, in opposite directions, counteract each other. The interconnecting frame and isolation apparatus allowing relative movement along x, y and z axis between the lead tong and the back-up tong, but which does not allow relative rotation about the z axis, the interconnecting frame prevents undesirable transverse forces from occuring, between the lead tong and the back-up tong in response to the driving torque of the lead tong. The interconnecting frame and isolation apparatus eliminates transverse forces which would otherwise develop because of irregularities of the threaded members. A load cell cooperating with the isolation apparatus, internally disposed in the interconnecting frame, cooperates between the isolation apparatus and the tong housing to produce a torque measurement without inducing transverse forces on the threaded members.

    • Single joint elevator (10) and method for releasably securing a tubular segment. A generally horseshoe-shaped body (20) has a slot (12) for receiving a tubular segment, and an actuator assembly that selectively moves opposing jaws (30) from a removed position to a deployed position to grip and retain the tubular segment within the slot of the body while hoisting the body. The deployable jaws (30) are either rotatably or translatably moved from the removed position to the deployed position and may be pneumatically, hydraulically, and/or electrically actuated. The actuator assembly may include wedges (52) operatively coupled to actuators (62) for selectively biasing the wedges against the jaws (54), or a cam ring (40) rotationally coupled to the body (20) and rotated by an actuator (42) coupled between the body and the cam ring, wherein the cam ring has an inner cam surface (41) for inwardly biasing the opposing jaws (30).

    • An improved tubular running tool (14) is disclosed for use on a rotary or top drive drilling rig of the type for inserting and selectively, internally gripping a tubular which may be utilized to lift, lower, rotate, and torque tubulars, and which may be used to fill and/or circulate fluid in and through tubulars within a wellbore. The internal tubular running tool may be used as or in conjuction with fill-up and circulating tools and with cementing head wiper plug assemblies among other tools. The tubular running tool includes an improved moving mechanism (100) having a cylindrical pneumatic chamber (106) annularly positioned with respect to a barrel element (54) that forms an axial fluid pathway therethrough. A cylindrical piston (104) is moveable within the cylindrical chamber to thereby move a cylindrical piston rod (102) connected to gripping slips (62) such that the slips selectively engage an interior portion of the tubular member.
