Magnetic pads connected to the three points on said frame such that the magnets have a low friction surface on their sliding contact face substantially tangential to the ball around which they track. The pads have opposite polarities such that they can form a magnetic circuit through the ball to maximise the holding flux. The pads are arranged so that two or more can share the same ball and hence focal point.

    • A hexapod machine is disclosed in which six adjustable length struts (1) couple to a controllably moveable platform (8) at three triangularly spaced locations at each of which a pair of struts couple together and to the platform at a bifurcated universal joint (7). The struts extend away from the platform and through machine nodes (4) defined at triangularly spaced-apart locations in a machine sub-frame, and at each such node a strut extending from one platform location and the next adjacent strut from the next adjacent platform location come together and cross each other in respective hemispheres of a bifurcated sphere journalled for multidirectional pivotal movement in a socket in the sub-frame. The hemispheres each contain a motor which is frictionally engaged with the respective strut so as to enable it to be driven through the hemisphere to adjust its effective length. By control of the motors, the platform position and orientation can be adjusted in space. Also disclosed is a pentapod machine in which a tripod with three adjustable legs defines the position of a first tool support, and the position of a second spaced-apart tool support is defined by two adjustable legs, a tool being supported between said two supports.

A means (Fig. 5) is also disclosed for leg length adjustment and additionally disclosed is a system (Figs. 6-9) enabling attachment of a fabric roof (92) to a frame work structure by virtue of a "foot" (90) secured along the fabric edge being received in a "shoe" (80) provided in the framework.

    • A constructional system which can be configured as a toy or for modelling, or can be sealed up for the construction of exhibition stands and temporary bulidings for example, has node-defining connector elements having gripping sockets into which elongate struts can be received and locked off at selectable angular positions. The struts connect to the sockets via ball-and-socket type universal joints incorporated into locking members which are adapted to be screwed into the sockets and thereby to come under compression to lock the joint. Telescopically adjustable struts are disclosed, as are telescopically adjustable struts which can be set to a nominal length and then are capable of extension and/or contraction about their set length against a spring force. A pneumatic device is disclosed which co-operates with telescopic struts to provide a measurable and adjustable spring force. Components other than struts can also be connected to the connector elements which can be made to be interconnectable with other available construction systems such as LEGO and K'NEX .

    • A computer aided design and manufacturing system comprises a platform (7) suspended by means of three pairs of supportive legs (8) which are coupled thereto at triangularly spaced-apart locations by means of three universal joints (9) each of which couples to one end of each of the two legs (8) of a respective pair, the two legs (8) of each pair extending from their respective universal joint (9) in divergent directions to spaced-apart locations in an overhead mounting whereat each leg (8) is drivingly engaged by a respective gimbal-mounted electric motor (10) arranged to move the leg (8) in its own longitudinal direction. The platform (7) position and orientation can thus be controlled by appropriate operation of the six leg drive motors (10). A rotary indexing stage (11) is mounted on the platform (7) for rotation in the plane of the platform (7) under control of a further electric motor (149, 150) and serves as a mounting for a stage (12) providing for pivotal movement in a plane perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the indexing stage (11), such pivotal movement being effected under control of yet a further electric motor. Mounted on the pivotal stage (12) is a rotary tool holder (13) arranged to be driven by yet another electric motor (75). The various electric motors are precisely positionable under computer control for effecting automatic manufacture of an object by cutting the same out of a block of material by means of a tool held in the tool holder (13).
