When the automatic transmission is in a non-running range, a ratio of the current intake air flow rate to the intake air flow rate equivalent friction at engine warmed-up is obtained and a compensation coefficient is set. Then, the intake air flow rate equivalent to friction at engine warmed-up is compensated for by a most recently updated compensation coefficient, and the result is defined as an intake air flow rate equivalent to friction.
