    • The present invention provides a ripple compensation method and apparatus that provides a means to compensate for drive current ripple-induced brightness fluctuations in an LEE based illumination system. The ripple compensation apparatus comprises a ripple evaluation module which is configured to evaluate a ripple compensation factor based on an evaluated fluctuation of the drive current. The evaluation of the fluctuation of the drive current can be determined based on information collected during operation of the LEE based illumination system and/or based on predetermined operational characteristics of the LEE based illumination. A control system comprises the ripple evaluation module and is operatively coupled to the one or more light-emitting elements, wherein the control system is configured to determine and provide control signals for operation of the one or more light-emitting elements based on the ripple compensation factor.

    • The invention provides an apparatus for sampling and determining characteristics of a light source. The apparatus comprises a sensor system configured to sample the spatial and spectral radiation characteristics of the light source and a goniometer that is configured to desirably control and adjust the relative position between the sensor system and the light source. The goniometer is configured to position the sensor system relative to the light source using two or more degrees of freedom. The apparatus additionally includes a control system configured to control the operation of the sensor system and the sampling of the spatial and spectral radiation characteristics of the light source. The control system is further configured to control operation of the goniometer for the relative positioning of the sensor system and the light source.

    • The light source comprises one or more first light-emitting elements for generating light having a first wavelength range and one or more second light-emitting elements for generating light having a second wavelength range. The first light-emitting elements and second light-emitting elements are responsive to separate control signals provided thereto. A control system receives a signal representative of the operating temperature from one or more sensing devices and determines first and second control signals based on the desired colour of light and the operating temperature. The light emitted by the first and second light-emitting elements as a result of the received first and second control signals can be blended to substantially obtain the desired colour of light. The desired colour of light generated can thus be substantially independent of junction temperature induced changes in the operating characteristics of the light-emitting elements.

    • The present invention provides a method and apparatus of using light-emitting elements for illumination as well as communication of data, wherein potential flicker due to sub-fusion frequency data correlations can be reduced compared to prior art techniques, while reducing redundancy in the data transmission. The intensity of the illumination from the light-emitting elements is controlled by a dimming signal such as a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal or a pulse code modulation (PCM) signal, for example. An amplitude-modulated data signal is then superimposed on the dimming signal for communication of data. The dimming signal thus acts as a carrier signal for the data signal. A sensing means is then used to receive the data signal by detecting all or part of the illumination from the light-emitting elements. The data signal can subsequently be extracted from the detected illumination.

    • The present invention provides a parallel pulse code modulation system enabling the independent control of a plurality of groups of one or more electronic devices. The system comprises a memory unit for receiving control data, from an external source, wherein this memory unit is configured to enable writing of the control data thereto and reading of the control data therefrom. The system further comprises a multiplexer connected to the memory unit for receiving the control data from the memory unit and organizing the control data into a serial data stream comprising groups of data. A shift register connected to the multiplexer receives the serial data stream from the multiplexer and translates each group of data into a parallel data stream output. Each parallel data stream output represents control parameters for a particular group of one or more electronic devices. A latch connected to the shift register and to the plurality of groups of one or more electronic devices, receives each parallel data stream output and sends a particular parallel data stream output to a corresponding group of one or more electronic devices, thereby providing independent control of the plurality of groups of one or more electronic devices. A logic sequencer integrated into the system provides sequencing and timing signals to the memory unit, the multiplexer, the shift register and the latch, thereby controlling actions and timing thereof.
