    • Disclosed here is an adaptive mixed-mode combustion method, which is mainly for internal combustion engines, either compression ignition or spark ignition, or mixed- mode engines using both compression ignition and spark ignition. The combustion method is composed of steps of partially charging fuel reformates through intake ports, or charging fuels with high ignition temperature through intake ports, wherein it has adaptive means to introduce fuels into combustion chamber space through both intake port fuel charge and direct fuel injections, based on engine loads and speeds, to produce a separate twin triangular heat release curves to effectively reduce emissions and fuel consumptions. A combustion engine using the disclosed combustion method is also provided. A corresponding method and fuel reformer of using exhaust energy for fuel reforming is also disclosed. Also disclosed is a rotating fuel reformer, comprising a rotating catalyst block to accelerate the fuel reforming rate and reduce the reformer weight and catalyst usage. The reformer also has devices to pressurize and atomize fuel through centrifugal forces.

    • A mixed- mode combustion method, which is mainly for internal combustion engines, either compression ignition or spark ignition, or mixed-mode engines using both compression ignition and spark ignition. The said combustion method utilizes a variable orifice fuel injector or at least two injectors per cylinder wherein it has means to produce variable spray patterns with smaller spray angle jets for earlier injection(s), and larger spray angle jets for main injection(s) around engine top dead center, respectively, in the same engine power cycle, wherein it has adaptive means to distribute fuel into combustion chamber space based on engine loads and speeds, to effectively reduce emissions and fuel consumptions. A combustion engine using the said combustion method is also provided.

    • The invention disclosed a fuel injector with variable orifice and a single needle valve, which is a fuel injection device for internal combustion engines, either diesel or gasoline engines. A variable orifice fuel injector, which is a high-accuracy couple of components comprising: (i) a nozzle body, which has fuel passages, which has inner cylindrical spaces for receiving a movable part, (ii) a needle valve, which has a converging- diverging conical head wherein has plural number of small channels to communicate fuels between two spaces composed by the said nozzle body and needle valve itself, which is movable back and forth and received in said nozzle body, wherein said needle valve is at a biased closing position or an opening position defined by driving means, (iii) a variable orifice on the said nozzle body comprising at least two rows of fuel channels with different diameters and different centerline angles between their center lines and the centerline of the said needle valve, with smaller diameter channels has smaller centerline angles and larger diameter channels with larger centerline angles, (iv) the said variable orifices was formed by the said moving needle valve and said nozzle body such that the said orifice fuel channels can be opened and closed selectively and continuously with different inlet areas, wherein has means of discharging fuel in variable sprays with different spray angles and penetrations through said variable orifice by lifting said needle valve at different magnitudes.
