    • The exhaust system of an an internal combustion engine includes a duct having an input end coupled to the engine for passing and processing the exhaust gases and fumes emitted by the engine such that the duct functions as an anti-explosion and fire arrester device. The duct includes a reenforced filter structure securely and firmly mounted within and across the duct opening. The filter structure is coated with a noble metal to enhance oxidation of the gases and fumes passing through the duct. An insulator layer is attached about and along the outer surface of the duct and a jacket for carrying a coolant is mounted above and about the insulator layer. The insulator layer isolates the coolant from the duct to ensure that the temperature on the external side of the jacket is less than a predetermined value. Simultaneously, the insulator layer isolates the duct from the coolant to enable the temperature within the duct to have a sufficiently high value to sustain oxidation of the gases and fumes. The input end of the duct may be connected to the engine via a first heat exchanger and the exhaust end of the duct may be connected by additonal heat exchangers to the exhaust system output.

    • A particulate filter (30) and a method for reducing pollutants are provided. The particulate filter (30) comprises at least one first piece (10), said first piece (10) comprising non-linear channels (16), and at least one second piece (20) adjacent to the at least one first piece (10). The particulate filter (30) is configured such that either the at least one first piece ( 10) or the at least one second piece (20) comprise either sintered metal fibers or porous metallic foam. The method comprises the steps of providing a particulate filter (30), said filter (30) comprising, at least one first piece (10), said first piece (10) comprising non-linear channels (16) and at least one second piece (20) adjacent to the at least one first piece (10), catalyzing the particulate filter (30) with a catalyst, passing exhaust stream (40) through the filter (30), filtering at least some soot from the exhaust stream (40), and chemically converting at least some NOx from the exhaust stream (40) with the catalyst.

    • A diesel exhaust treatment system is disclosed that includes first and second diesel particulate reduction devices. The first diesel particulate reduction device is located upstream in the exhaust flow and contains an oxidation catalyst coating. The second particulate reduction device is located downstream from the first particulate reduction device and is generally non-catalyzed or lightly catalyzed. Each particulate reduction device comprises a flow-through fabric-type filtration media with substantial internal turbulence. As exhaust gas passes through the catalyzed upstream particulate reduction device, nitric oxide (NO) is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), a portion of which interacts with the particulate trapped within the upstream diesel particulate reduction device to regenerate the upstream device. A remaining portion of exhaust gas containing NO 2 enters the downstream diesel particulate reduction device, where an additional portion interacts with the trapped particulate to regenerate the device. The relative volume weighted efficiency of the upstream particulate reduction device and of the downstream particulate reduction device are selected to optimize the overall system particle capture efficiency and backpressure, as well as to balance the amount of NO 2 made with the amount of NO 2 consumed so as to minimize NO 2 emissions.
