    • An exhaust particulate filter (24, 124) for an engine system (22) includes a housing having an inlet (31), an outlet (33) and a shell (34, 134) shaped to fit the particulate filter (24, 124) within a predefined spatial envelope. Filter elements (42, 142) arranged in a bundle (36, 136) and having a packing arrangement are positioned within the housing. Each of the filter elements (42, 142) includes a perforated tube (50, 150) wrapped with fibrous metallic filter media (52, 152). The bundle (36, 136) defines a perimetric line at least partially matched to the shape of the shell (34, 134). An assembly method for a particulate filter (24, 124) includes arranging filter elements (42, 142) in a packing structure within a bundle (36, 136), the bundle (36, 136) having peripherally located filter elements (42a) and internally located filter elements (42b). The filter elements (42, 142) each include a perforated tube (50, 150) wrapped with fibrous metallic filter media (52, 152). The assembly method further includes positioning the bundle (36, 136) of filter elements (42, 142) within a housing having a shape at least partially matched to a shape of the bundle (34, 134). A unique method of joining various of the components via swagging is also disclosed. Clamping of the filter media (52, 152), and joints between filter element (42, 142) and support plates (38, 40, 138, 140, 238, 338), may be achieved via swagging, for example.

    • A particulate filter (30) and a method for reducing pollutants are provided. The particulate filter (30) comprises at least one first piece (10), said first piece (10) comprising non-linear channels (16), and at least one second piece (20) adjacent to the at least one first piece (10). The particulate filter (30) is configured such that either the at least one first piece ( 10) or the at least one second piece (20) comprise either sintered metal fibers or porous metallic foam. The method comprises the steps of providing a particulate filter (30), said filter (30) comprising, at least one first piece (10), said first piece (10) comprising non-linear channels (16) and at least one second piece (20) adjacent to the at least one first piece (10), catalyzing the particulate filter (30) with a catalyst, passing exhaust stream (40) through the filter (30), filtering at least some soot from the exhaust stream (40), and chemically converting at least some NOx from the exhaust stream (40) with the catalyst.
