    • A vehicle simulator has three video monitors which display three respective windows, i.e., sectors, of a simulated space. Each of the monitors is held in a respective housing, and each housing is mounted on the simulator. Also, a respective video controller is associated with each monitor, and each controller is mounted on the housing of the associated monitor.One of the controllers is a master controller which calculates a reference position representative of the position of the simulated vehicle in a simulated space, based upon user-generated control signals. A signal representing the reference position is transmitted from the master controller to the two slave controllers. Based upon the reference position, each of the controllers generates a video display of a predetermined sector of the simulated space and causes its associated monitor to present the predetermined sector. The sectors that are displayed on the monitors which are associated with the slave controllers are offset by a predetermined angular amount from the sector displayed by the monitor of the master controller, so that the sector displayed by each monitors is congruent with the physical position of its respective monitor. The predetermined sector calculated by each slave controller can be relatively easily changed by appropriately changing the value of the angular offset which is established for the controller.

    • Apparatus for controlling the movement of an electronic image on a video display includes a base member, a seat for an operator, a support assembly for mounting the seat on the base member in facing relation to the video display, such that the seat can be tilted relative to the base member. Two handles project upwardly from the base member, adjacent respective opposed sides of the seat for being grasped by the operator in the seat to impart tilting movement thereto by shifting the weight of the operator in a direction corresponding to a desired directional movement of the image. A plurality of electrical switches are provided for sensing the tilting movement of the seat and for generating an electrical signal indicative thereof. Video game control circuitry is responsive to the discrete electrical signal for moving the electronic image in response to the tilting movement of the seat. The apparatus is particularly well-suited for use in connection with a flight simulation video game, whereby the video display is used to simulate the movements of an aircraft and the sensations experienced by an aircraft pilot during various movements of the aircraft.

    • A flight simulation game apparatus allows a game player to simulate hang glider maneuvers through physical sensations. A control lever which can be gripped by the hands of the game player is mounted on a framework and extends in transverse directions of the frame work. The control lever can be moved in longitudinal directions of the framework by a control lever moving mechanism mounted on the framework. While in simulated flight, the game player can view at least a front simulated scene image is displayed by a display monitor. A control system vertically scrolls the front simulated scene image displayed by the display monitor in response to movement of the control lever in the longitudinal direction. The control lever moving mechanism also allows the control lever to be moved in the transverse direction and also angularly moved about a vertical axis, and the control system horizontally scrolls the displayed front simulated scene image in response to movement of the control lever in the transverse direction and angular movement of the control lever about the vertical axis.

    • A vehicle simulator has tandem surfaces for supporting first and second users, who "drive" respective first and simulated vehicles through a simulated space. A solenoid is mounted underneath each surface for selectively impacting the associated surface to give the user the sensation of having his simulated vehicle hit by a projectile.Each user sits in front of a video monitor, and each monitor is electrically connected to a computer. Each computer has a "map" of a simulated space stored in its electronic memory, and the computers are linked through a common RAM. The computers cause their monitors to display a changing video image of the simulated space to model motion of the simulated vehicles through the space, in response to signals from controls that can be manipulated by the operators.Each user controls a trigger which can be pushed to initiate the motion of a simulated projectile through the simulated space toward the user's vehicle. The computer of the shooter sends a signal to the RAM to indicate that s hot has been initiated. The computer of the user being shot accesses the common RAM each game cycle to determine whether a shot has been fired, and if so, computes whether the shot has "hit" the associated vehicle. If the computer determines that a "hit" has occurred, the computer activates the solenoid of the seat of the user being shot to thump the seat and thereby model the effects of a hit on the vehicle.

    • A visual display system for producing a continuous far-focused virtual image according to the present invention includes a number of adjacent video image generation and display modules. Each module includes an image generator that generates a video image representative of a portion of a composite display image displayed on a video display. The visual display system also includes a number of optical viewing lenses associated with each video image generation and display modules and positioned between the operator and the video display. The lenses restrict the operator's field of view such that the operator views only a portion of the active display area of the video displays. The lenses of adjacent modules are joined together along their edges to form an enclosure partially surrounding the operator so that the operator views the composite display image displayed on the video displays through the lenses and perceives the composite display image as a continuous far-focused virtual image.
