    • The invention concerns a subnetwork of a filter circuit which is useful for detecting the dialing tone used in a telephone system. The arrangement employs active devices such as operational amplifiers in circuit with passive resistive and capactive elements to simulate an inductance S. Although it is known to modify a gyrator circuit to produce a 1/s2 function it has hitherto been considered that the use of such simulated functions in a ladder filter network would produce an unstable arrangement. It has been found that the combination of a 1/s2 element in series with a simulated 1/s element is stable and suitable for use in ladder filter networks.

    • An RC active filter device which is implemented with integrated circuit technology. Each RC filter element of the device has a distributed series resistance and a distributed shunt capacitance. The series resistance is formed by a strip of resistive material which overlies a resistive plate (or substrate) with an intervening insulating layer to form the shunt capacitance. The filter device can be designed to have a pass-band ripple response which is not affected by variation in nominal absolute resistance and capacitance values resulting from process spreads. These variations only stretch or compress the filter response along the frequency axis. The filter device comprises three RC filter elements and an operational amplifier. The RC filter elements nearest the operational amplifier determine a low pass band, while the input filter element prevents high frequency components outside the low pass band being leaked directly to the filter device output.

    • To eliminate the high frequency portion of an input signal while permitting low frequency and DC portions to pass, the electronic filter utilizes an n-1 order active network in combination with a capacitor to generate a shunt current, thereby providing a low pass filter having n-order operating characteristics. Included in the active network is an active element, such as an operational amplifier, which responds to an input signal by creating a voltage across the capacitor, resulting in a shunt current that in turn provides the desired filter characteristics. In certain special cases the n-order active filter can utilize a differentiating element in combination with n-2 order active network along with the capacitor to achieve n-order operating characteristics.
