    • An array of vertically aligned electron emitting nanotips such as multiwall carbon nanotubes are formed and patterned for use as a lithographic stamp. The spacing and/or arrangement of the nanotips correspond to a predetermined pattern that is desired to be formed on an opposing substrate. Simultaneous actuation of the nanotips by a common electrode forms a pattern on the opposing substrate without any necessary scanning techniques or use of masks. Applying a sufficient electrical potential between the array and the substrate generates electron emission from the tips so as to cure a resist, produce localized electrochemical reactions, establish localized electrostatic charge distributions or perform other desirable coating or etching process steps so as to create nanoelectronic circuitry or to facilitate molecular or nanoscale processing.

    • The method of the present invention includes the steps of rotating a molecule having a predetermined structure by applying a first alternating current electromagnetic field to the molecule, wherein the first alternating current electromagnetic field is produced by an electromagnetic field generation means that is set to a predetermined phase, controlling a rotational phase of the molecule by applying a second electromagnetic field to the rotated molecule by an information recording means, detecting a signal using a signal detection means in accordance with a rotation of the molecule having the rotational phase which has been controlled, and outputting a shift between the phase of the first alternating current electromagnetic field and a phase of the detection signal from the signal detection means as information by an information reading means.

    • Disclosed is a method of recording/reproducing information signals at an access speed in the order of &mgr;s, a recording density of 1 to 10 GBs/cm2, and a data transfer rate in the order of Gbit/sec without breakage of the data. The method includes the steps of: making a head device face to a memory medium having a flat recording surface, the head device including a plurality of head elements two-dimensionally arranged each of which has at its leading end a flat portion having an area of 0.1 &mgr;2 or less; moving the head device relative to the memory medium a distance more than a gap between two adjacent ones of the head elements; and recording an information signal at a specific position of the recording surface at a recording density of 1 Gbit/cm2 or more, or reproducing an information signal previously recorded on the recording surface at a specific position by the head device.
