    • The present invention relates to an apparatus for manufacturing molten iron. The present invention provides an apparatus for manufacturing molten iron including a charge container receiving the supply of reducing material in which hot fine direct reduced iron from multiple fluidized-bed reactors are mixed; at least one pair of roller presses to which the fine direct reduced iron is supplied to undergo roll pressing, thereby producing continuous compacted material having lumped portions adjacent to each other; a crusher crushing the compacted material produced by the roller presses; and a melter-gasifier to which is charged crushed compacted material that is crushed by the crusher. Each of the pair of roller presses include pressed portions and protruded lines formed between the pressed portions. The pressed portions include first and second pressed portions opposing each other and first and second concave surfaces continuously formed on the first and second pressed portions along an axial direction of the at least one pair of roller presses, respectively. When viewed from a direction perpendicular to a plane centered between the first and the second pressed portions: (i) the first and second concave surfaces partially overlap each other, and (ii) the protruded lines are unaligned on the opposing first and second pressed portions.

    • A process and apparatus to treat powdered minerals placed in gaseous suspension by thermal exchange. The process includes the steps of preheating the minerals to be treated by the exhaust gas from a furnace. The minerals are then treated in the furnace. The minerals are then cooled with a stream of air prior to introducing the stream of air into the furnace. The furnace exhaust gases are filtered before being released into the atmosphere. A majority of the filtrate is mixed with the minerals leaving the furnace. The remainder of the filtrate is placed in suspension in a current of air diverted from the current of warm air which cools the minerals leaving the furnace. The remainder of the filtrate is separated from the air. The remainder of the filtrate is then mixed with the treated minerals and at least partially cooled. The diverted air is mixed with the furnace exhaust gases.

    • An apparatus and process for calcining gypsum is disclosed which utilizes a flash furnace for rapidly calcining fine particulate gypsum while the material is suspended in a stream of hot gas. The method and apparatus utilize a two-stage suspension preheater for utilizing waste gases from the calcining furnace for preheating raw material to be calcined and a two-stage suspension cooler for cooling hot calcined gypsum which is discharged from the calcining furnace. Spent cooling gas is supplied to the preheater for use in preheating the fresh gypsum to be calcined. The invention also contemplates recirculating a portion of the gypsum discharged from the furnace back to the furnace for further calcination. Hot product may be discharged directly from the furnace.
