摘要： The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of thermally expandable thermoplastic microspheres. The process comprises, providing a mixture of monomeric materials suitable for polymerisation to form a thermoplastic polymer and at least one blowing agent, providing to the mixture a colloidal silica that is surface-modified with at least hydrophobic organosilane groups and forming an emulsion. A polymerisation is performed to form the thermally expandable thermoplastic microspheres. The invention further relates to thermally expandable thermoplastic micro spheres, expanded micro spheres and their use in the manufacture of products.

摘要： A method of freeze-drying comprising rapidly freezing either liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide in and around a material having pores at a rate of at least 0.2° C./min to limit the size of crystals formed from the carbon dioxide so as to avoid the formation of gas bubbles and damage to the pores and exposure of the material to gas-liquid interfaces. During freezing a solid layer primarily of solid carbon dioxide is formed on and surrounding the material by transferring heat with a cryogenic liquid circulating about the material. This solid layer protects the material from gas-liquid interfaces and surface tension before decreasing pressure about the material by venting carbon dioxide.

摘要： A production process for heat-expanded microspheres includes the step of providing a gaseous fluid containing heat-expandable microspheres, which includes a shell of thermoplastic resin and a blowing agent encapsulated therein having a boiling point not higher than the softening point of the thermoplastic resin and have an average particle size from 1 to 100 μm. The gaseous fluid is fed through a gas-introducing tube having a dispersion nozzle on its outlet that is fixed inside a conduit having a hot gas flow flowing therethrough. A jet of the gaseous fluid is emitted through the dispersion nozzle. Further, the gaseous fluid is collided on a collision plate fixed under the dispersion nozzle so as to disperse the heat-expandable microspheres in the hot gas flow. The dispersed heat-expandable microspheres are heated in the hot gas flow at a temperature not lower than their expansion initiating temperature and thus expanded.

摘要： From an environmental viewpoint, it is desireable to cause degradation of expanded EPS beads and foam cups and other products formed from expanded EPS beads, which are composed of polystyrene and a blowing agent such as pentane. For this purpose, the present invention utlizes the pre-expansion step as an opportunity to initiate foam product degradation by treating the expandable polymer beads during their pre-expansion. The objective of this degradation treatment is to initiate degradation of at least the surfaces of individual beads during their pre-expansion and before they are molded into the final foam articles. For this purpose, a number of degradation treatment options are disclosed for application during bead pre-expansion, including heating the beads by circulation with heated air, admixture of the beads with ozone, aromatic ketones such as acetophenone and benzophenone, and metallic salts, as well as irradiation of the expanding beads with uv radiation (e.g of a wavelength of about 260 nanometers). As a result of the interposed degradation treatment, the foam products degrade first into individual beads, and subsequently into polymeric dust, at a rate that depends upon the intensity of the degradation treatment that is selected.
