    • A hopper car discharge section may be wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Outflow is controlled by movable closure members. The hopper car has a plurality of hoppers of which two hoppers share a common ridge assembly. The ridge assembly forms a common mating and fit up location for the upper margins of the slope sheets of two lengthwise adjacent hoppers. The ridge assembly includes an horizontal center section and two end plates that angle upwardly outboard toward the top chords of the sidewalls. The ridge assembly stands proud of the upper margin of the respective adjacent slope sheets. A gusset is mounted between the adjacent slope sheets below the ridge plate such that the slope sheets and gusset form a reinforcement tube running across the car, the end plates forming the stems of a vertical T-section attached to the sidewall and overlapping the top chord.

    • A hopper gasket structure, readily applicable to a hopper door edge, comprises an elongated flexible strip of compressible material with a continuous projecting rib, and a plurality of narrow elongated spring clips of Z contour extending transversely of the strip and each has a return bend at one end, adapted to receive and tightly grip a door edge, and has an oppositely facing return bend at its other end, adapted to grip the rib and retain the strip against the door web when the door is closed.

    • An arrangement for discharging materials from a hopper which includes a gate structure having a housing provided with flanges adapted to be connected to the flanges at the lower part of the housing wherein a resilient gasket is disposed in compressed relation between the flanges of the gate housing and the lower part of the hopper, the gasket having side sections running the length of the hopper and end sections running the width of the hopper, each side section having a bevel on the slope sheet side of the hopper to allow for free flow of the lading inside the hopper, the end section having a similar type of bevel except that the bottom is contoured to hug the vertical end panel of the discharge gate, said gasket further having two dimples running continually therearound to insure airtight seal, and lastly the bottom of the gasket being contoured to make the transition from the vertical end panel to the slope on the side panel without leaving a hole or bulge that could cause an air leak.
