    • Apparatus for lubricating and curling a rim of a paperboard container includes a housing block defining a central recess sized and configured to accept therein a rim of a paperboard container to be curled. An annular curling channel is disposed in the recess for curling the rim of the paperboard container in response to relative advancing movement between the paperboard container and the housing block. The housing block also defines an annular liquid channel concentrically disposed in surrounding relationship to the annular curling channel for distributing lubricating liquid. A porous liquid transfer ring is attached to the housing block in covering relationship to the annular liquid channel so that lubricating liquid supplied to the liquid channel comes into contact with the liquid transfer ring. The liquid transfer ring includes a circular edge surface which defines a central opening such that the liquid transfer ring extends at least partially over the curling channel. In use, the rim of the paperboard container comes into wiping contact with the central opening of the liquid transfer ring so that lubricating liquid is transferred thereto prior to the rim being curled in the curling channel.

    • Apparatus for positioning a chime ring member of a drum closure assembly into an interference, fitted relationship, with a fibre drum. The apparatus comprises a support frame and a sliding head assembly mounted on the support frame. The sliding head assembly includes a chime ring retaining member. A drum support assembly is also mounted on the support frame and includes a first and second drum retention means. The first drum retention means prevent movement of the drum during positioning of the chime ring member while the second drum retention means guides the concentric expansion of the top portion of the drum. Means are also provided for actuating movement of the sliding head assembly as well as a source of power for supplying energy to the sliding head assembly.

    • A machine for forming a corrugated package from sheet material including a rotatable corrugation head having a fluted periphery and a front face; corrugating means and sealing means movable into association with the head for corrugating an inner sheet material and sealing two plys of material together, respectively; means for feeding an inner sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent said corrugating means and means for feeding an outer sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent the sealing means; means for moving a bottom wall member having a selected shape into engagement with the front face of the head and associated with the first and second sheets to form the bottom wall of the package; and means to control the operation of said machine so that the rotation of said head and the function of the above-described components are coordinated to form a corrugated side wall of the package from two sheets simultaneously with the joinder of said side wall with the bottom wall member.The method of forming a corrugated package pursuant to this invention comprises the steps of corrugating an inner sheet of material having a selected width and length into fluted corrugations while forming the sheet into a shape defining a portion of the package side wall; positioning a bottom wall member having an outer edge adjacent the corrugated inner sheet; wrapping an outer sheet of material having a width greater than the width of the inner sheet around the corrugated inner sheet so that a portion of the outer sheet projects over the outer edge of the bottom wall member and; simultaneously joining the outer sheet to the inner sheet and to said bottom wall member so that said sheets form plys of a corrugated side wall and are joined to said bottom wall member to produce a corrugated package.

    • Containers and a method for forming such containers having larger brims with reduced brim curl defects is disclosed including providing a plurality of container blanks for forming containers, forming a plurality of container shells from the plurality of blanks, accumulating the plurality of container shells at an accumulation station, subjecting at least an upper periphery of the shells to a humid atmosphere to precondition the shells with the atmosphere preferably including steam, successively removing the shells from the accumulator and subsequently forming a brim curl about an upper periphery of the shell with the shells being subject to the humid atmosphere for a predetermined time period sufficient to form defect-free brim curls by extending the forming strain limits of the paperboard material. This method being carried out by using an accumulator for accumulating the container shells for further processing. Alternatively, the container blanks can be retained in a hopper leaving the portion of the container blank to be formed into the brim of the container exposed.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus for beading the edge or rim of a cup having a seamed annular sidewall and a polygonal base. A spinning head having a plurality of radially moveable forming members for contact with the rim to produce a bead is located over and in register with a cup-supporting base plate. The base plate together with relatively moveable socket forming wall members provides a seat for the cup on a cam operated elevator device which moves the cup upwardly. The socket is complementary to the polygonal base to prevent rotation of the seated and supported cup relative to the socket. The socket walls retract into a common horizontal plane with the base plate to permit rotationally driven star wheels to guide and confine cups onto the base plate in register with the forming means and off of the base plate away from the forming means. An air stream is directed into the cup to produce a positive pressure which inhibits dust from entering the cup during the forming operation.

    • An improved composite container is disclosed including a tubular fibrous body wall having at its upper end a reversely curled portion the upper extremity of which is radially inwardly compressed in such a manner as to form an annular external locking projection by means of which a synthetic plastic closure cap may be fastened to close the container. Preferably the closure member is connected with the container by a tearable tamperproof connection including a radially inwardly directed annular rib that is locked beneath the annular body projection to maintain the closure cap on the container. A method is also disclosed for forming the container body, including the steps of radially outwardly curling the upper end of the body member, radially inwardly comressing the upper extremity of the reversely curled portion, and mounting a synthetic plastic snap-type closure member on the compressed curled end. In one embodiment, a circumferential recess is formed (for example, by skiving) in the outer surface of the tubular fibrous body wall prior to the reverse curling step, whereby the upper extremity of the reversely curled portion is radially inwardly compressed into the recess.

    • A paperboard container and method of forming such container having a rolled brim is disclosed. The container being formed of a paperboard material having a caliper of at least approximately 0.007 inches, a rolled brim arc length of less than about 0.25 inches, an outer radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim being less than approximately 1.5 inches with the paperboard material forming the container having at least approximately 8 lbs/3,000 ft.sup.2 ream of size press adhesive included therein and preferably approximately 13 lbs/3,000 ft.sup.2 ream of paperboard material. One particular container includes dimensions wherein the outer radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim is approximately 1.25 inches while an inner radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim is at least 1.09 inches. Such a container is formed by initially providing a paperboard shell formed from a paperboard blank having an unfinished annular exposed edge; directing the unfinished annular edge into a forming surface of a forming die; urging the unfinished annular edge into the forming die and controlling an initial buckling point of the unfinished annular edge of the paperboard shell such that a substantially defect free prolate rolled toroidal brim is formed.
