    • A vapor cooled type internal combustion engine is provided with an auxiliary reservoir and a coolant management system. The management system establishes fluid communication between the reservoir and a cooling circuit of the engine in a manner to fill the latter with liquid coolant when the engine is not in use and thus exclude contaminating non-condensible air from same, and monitors the operation of the system when operating in a closed mode to determine if too much or too little coolant has been retained in the circuit following a warm-up mode wherein the excess coolant which fills the system when cold, is displaced by its own vapor pressure. The management system also ensures that the cooling circuit is not switched from closed to open states while the possibility of superatmospheric pressures developing therein exist and thus prevents violent displacement of coolant out of the circuit to the reservoir in a manner which invites spillage of coolant and the entry of large amounts of contaminating air.

    • In order to rapidly bring the temperature of the coolant in the coolant jacket of an evaporative type cooling system to a derived target value, both the rate of heat exchange between the condenser or radiator of the system and the surrounding ambient atmospheric air and the amount of coolant in the cooling circuit are varied in a manner to change the pressure and therefore the boiling point of the coolant. With the invention coolant is positively pumped to and from a reservoir which is maintained at atmospheric pressure, into and out of a cooling circuit which is hermetically sealed during engine operation via a valve and conduit arrangement which includes only two electromagnetic valves and associated conduits. A reversible pump is utilized to pump the coolant to and from the reservoir. The coolant is permitted to pass unrestrictedly through the pump when the pump is not operating due to a pressure differential between the cooling circuit and the reservoir.

    • In order to avoid the need to provide auxiliary pumps and the like to obviate cavitation problems in the coolant return pump and the coolant jacket of an evaporative cooling type engine cooling system, a heater circulation pump which circulates heated coolant through a cabin heating circuit is selectively connected with a reservoir in which liquid coolant is stored and energized to pump fresh relatively cool coolant into the coolant jacket in the event that the normal coolant return pump is sensed as operating continuously for more than a predetermined period of time and thus ensure that the level of coolant in the coolant jacket is maintained at an appropriate level. Upon a positive pressure developing in the system a valve upstream of the coolant return pump is opened and hot coolant is displaced out to the reservoir. When a negative pressure develops the aforementioned valve is opened and fresh cool coolant from the reservoir is inducted into the system upstream of the pump to alleviate pump cavitation.

    • A reservoir for holding fluid of a vehicle includes a tank and two brackets integrated with the tank to install the tank in the vehicle in an upper portion of the engine compartment. An attaching portion is arranged with each of the brackets to be fixed to the vehicle. A connecting portion is arranged with each of the brackets to connect the attaching portion to the tank. One of the connecting portions has a notch that is deformed or fractured so that the tank can be moved with respect to the vehicle to absorb an impact force that acts on the tank when the tank receives an impact force larger than a predetermined value. The attaching portion has a plurality of rib portions that is deformable or fracturable so that the tank can be moved with respect to the vehicle to absorb force that acts to the tank when the tank receives a force larger than a predetermined value.
