    • An inflatable vehicle occupant protection device system (10, 110) for helping to protect a vehicle occupant in a crash event includes a module (12, 112), which may be mounted in a vehicle and includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (24, 124). A mechanism controls flow of inflation fluid from an inflator (26, 126) to the protection device (24, 124). The mechanism also includes a first igniter (30, 130) and a second igniter (32, 132), which provide for inflation fluid flow from the inflator (26, 126) to the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (24, 124). The system (10, 110) also includes a crash sensor (14, 114) for sensing a vehicle crash event and providing an activation signal. The igniters (30, 130 and 32, 132) are responsive to the crash sensor (14, 114) over a shared signal path (16, 116 and 18, 118) between the module (12, 112) and the crash sensor (14, 114). A delay device (46, 146) delays actuation of the second igniter (32, 132) for a predetermined time period after actuation of the first igniter (30, 130).

    • An apparatus (10a) comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device and a container (16a) which contains inflation fluid. A valve (30a) is located outside the container in an inflation fluid flow path extending from the container to the protection device. An initiator (20a) is actuatable to initiate a flow of the inflation fluid from the container (16a) to the valve (30a) along the flow path. The valve (30a) includes a metering member (70a) and a thermostatic metal element (72a) engaging the metering member to move the metering member in the flow path under the influence of changes in the ambient temperature prior to initiation of the flow. Preferably, the metering member (70a) normally has an initial position defining an initial outlet flow area. The valve (30a) preferably further includes pyrotechnic material (140a) which, when ignited, produces combustion products that develop a thrust that moves the metering member (70a) to a subsequent position defining a subsequent outlet flow area greater than the initial outlet flow area.

The apparatus (10) also includes vehicle electric circuitry (90) including a sensor (92) for sensing at least one occupant condition or vehicle condition and a controller (100) responsive to the sensor for controlling the electrically energizable mechanism (80).

    • An apparatus (10) includes a member (14) that has a first slot (30) extending through the member within the periphery (32) of the member. The first slot (30) has opposed spaced surfaces (34) that define a gap (40) that has a width measured from one of the opposed surfaces to the other of the opposed surfaces. The member (14) includes first and second portions (42 and 44) positioned on opposite sides of the first slot (30). The apparatus (10) also includes a sensor (16) that has a first end (100) connected to the first portion (42) on one side of the first slot (30) and an opposite second end (102) connected to the second portion (44) on an opposite side of the first slot such that the sensor extends across the first slot. The apparatus (10) further includes a fastener (20) for fixedly connecting the second portion (44) to inhibit movement of the second portion of the member relative to the first portion (42). The first portion (42) moves relative to the second portion (44) when a force is applied to the first portion, which causes the width of the gap to change. The sensor (16) provides a signal in response to the change in the gap width.

    • A vehicle safety apparatus (10) comprises an inflatable occupant protection device (12) having a deflated condition and an inflated condition for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle. The apparatus also comprises an inflator (14) for providing inflation fluid to the inflatable device (12) to inflate the inflatable device. The apparatus further comprises a heater (30) with an electrically energizable heating element (32) for controlling the temperature of the inflator (14). Preferably, an adhesive material (40) secures the heating element to the inflator. Alternatively, or additionally, the heater (30) is flexible and conforms to a surface (22) of the inflator (14).
